Europe's "PlayStation man" on PS3

PS3 News | PS3 still a bargain. Really!
Gamesindustry.biz recently conducted an interview with Chris Deering, founder of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. One of his major claims to fame was growing the European market to to approximately 24% of Sony's sales globally - under his reigns, SCE Europe moved over 75 million PlayStation and PlayStation 2 consoles for a value of over €30bn. No matter which way you cut it, that's a lot of hardware.

Known more popularly as Sony's European "PlayStation man", Mr. Deering has since left Sony and now holds Chairman's positions with Codemasters, developers of Jericho and Colin McRae: DIRT, and the Edinburgh Interactive Festival.

While not quite Krazy Ken, Mr. Deering's still a strong supporter of PlayStation 3 value for money, stating, "The price, which has clearly been circled as a major issue for PS3, is a bit of a sticker shock compared with traditional game devices. But if you think about PlayStation 1, which launched at GBP 299 in 1995 - that's 12 years ago, when the price of a pint of beer was a pound."

He continued, "So in real money, EUR 600, USD 600 or even GBP 400, considering what you're getting, shouldn't be seen as such a terrifying number. It's certainly not helping the sales, but in terms of value for money, there's never been a better value."

Acknowledging the issues Sony has had capturing the hearts and minds of gamers this generation, he also said, "I think that there's been a bit of a downer on the PR front, and that may be partly the way that PR is co-ordinated around the world, between Japan, the US and Europe. PR-wise, this is a slow season, summer blues as they say in the games industry."

Pulling no punches, he ended with, "I think PlayStation 3 will be looked back upon ten years from now as a fabulous, life-changing invention."

I think that it will be the case because seriously it has the technology to last that long.

MS certainly can do it with the 360 and maybe with the "Falcon" they will put the Xbox 360 Elite features in there such as HDMI etc.

Also I think the industry will be more mature about the differences in gaming profiles in the next few years. Whereas at present they had all guns blazing for MS and Sony and now they are charging off to the Wii casual gamer battle. Its like watching ants at a picnic. Plus I just don't see Sony fans leaving just because the Wii and Xbox 360 is cheaper.

The main kicker for Sony will be if blu-ray doesn't get up. At this stage its looking pretty bright for blu ray.

Look price is an issue but people pay far more for their PCs, sound systems and LCD/Plasma TVs. So its just another entertainment system that costs a little money.
