PS3 sales reach 50,000 in Australia

PS3 News | Outselling Wii and 360 in the same period.
In an interview with GameSpot, Sony Computer Entertainment Australia's managing director Michael Ephraim has revealed that the PlayStation 3 has sold more than 50,000 units in Australia since it's launch fourteen weeks ago on March 23. This comes shortly after Nintendo's announcement that their Wii console passed the 100,000 sold mark, although it was launched back in December 2006. For a more direct comparison, the Wii reached the 50,000 sold mark much faster - a mere three weeks after launch.

"Based on GfK since launch, PS3 has been the number one next-gen console, outselling Wii and Xbox 360 every week, except for last week," Ephraim said. "Since March 23, PS3 has been the number one-selling next-gen console in Australia, and this is GfK figures. We've now sold 50,000--and we're very excited about the fact that it's being sold in retailers that are gaming retailers as a gaming device and other things, but as you'll notice it's now being sold in Harvey Norman consumer electronic stores as a Blu-ray player."

Wow, that's a lot more than I would have expected in this time frame, they've really been moving those consoles! Seems like even at it's high price the PS3 is still a force to be reckoned with. A good start indeed.

Word of mouth. That's what is selling it. People are scared to lay down the grand for it, then when they hear it from a friend or try it and see what it can do, they pick it up. I've heard the story a million times already. We've sold through maybe 6-8 batches now.

Congrats Sony.

Its great for Sony but there isnt enough games for me thus far to justify a purchase and for a game machine I cant justify the price still.

While I think Nintendo should suffer in their jocks, I feel a bit sorry for the 360 though. MS have done very well so far, what more can they do? They have the price, the games, LIVE and are being beaten by a 1k machine which only plays Resistance (so far of course).

Well Europe is Sonyland I guess.

EDIT: oh yeah, the fact that the PS3 is beating consoles which people have had the opportunity to buy for much longer kinda takes away some glory.

They should of at least released a version that doesn't have Blu-ray, then I would be in. So for now its nice for them to succeed, however succeeding in Australia is not really going to do much.

This really shocks me actually. I thought of all the places in the world Aus would hold the most skepticism toward such a highly priced piece of hardware. I guess when it comes to Sony, Aussies aren't as skeptical as I would have thought.

It's good to be surprised. Now bring on the games!

But not in profit!

I honestly wonder who is buying all these PS3s because I only know two people with them.

So PS3 took 14 weeks to sell 50,000, and the Wii took 3 weeks to reach 50,000. 360 probabaly reached that number much faster too, given it had a much bigger launch then the PS3.

Looking at it another way, Sony announced they sold 27,000 in the first 3 days. So it seems sales have collapsed since then, since they haven't even doubled their lauch weekend 14 weeks later.

So why is this good news for Sony?

I have plenty and most of the ones into video games have Xbox 360s* or will purchase an Xbox 360 when they get the chance. Only one of those is thinking of purchasing a PS3 and that is only for Final Fantasy XIII.

Different area, different allegence icon_razz.gif

*Curiously out of all those 360s, only one has failed and I suspect it was because it had been modded.

Question: If GFK has official numbers - why don't they release them to the public along with the charts?

I take it this is a stab at me icon_smile.gif

Hey, I own one of those dusk collectors thank you very much.

360 has well over 130k units sold I remember, they still have a bit of work to do old Sony. But Europe and Australia is their stomping ground, they always do well here.

HEY EVERYBODY, ITS TIME FOR ANECDOTAL SALES EVIDENCE BASED ON A TINY SKEWED SAMPLE WITH DANCES IN UNDERWEAR

Wii x2
360 x2
PS3 x1
DS x2
PSP x1

since PS3 launch:
Wii x1
360 x1
PS3 x1
DS x1
PSP x0

Therefore PS3 is selling as much as the 360 and Wii in the same time period. No clear winner, console race declared dead heat.

And I think its time for me to get a PS3. I want to get one and then get Stranglehold, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Warhawk and GTAIV, all obviously when they are released.

I'm gonna take the plunge this week, probably pick up Resistance too, plus the HDMI cable.

Can't wait!

seems like it can only get better aswell with so many holding off for more games and/or a price drop

This has to be the most expensive generation yet, seriously, three consoles and a HDTV/receiver....... thats about $5000 I have spent, maybe more, on games........ non gamers think I am insane, anyone else checked their expendature?

Whilst I bet a certain someone here on PALGN that Sony would make this target, I have to say that I am personally amazed they actually made it - well at least that's what they are telling us right? Even if it is a little white fib, at least it saves me from eating a t-shirt.

So what's the next big target? If the rumors of a fair price drop are true, PS3 could really build some momentum now. Everyone seems to be factoring a price of US$399 before November. All we need by then are some good games and a good telly.

As ManeKast just said - non gamers are not going to spend $5K on a games / TV rig with a few less than earth shattering games - but they might be interested in a PS3 at a more reasonable AU$495 to $549 price range plus four or five $90 games and a $2,295 HD 1080p TV set yes?

Don't buy all 3 consoles, that might be a good start. And I have spent a grand total of $0 on this generation.. icon_sad.gif

Boring news. As Leon said, Sony always dominate Australia and Europe, and (at least in Australia) thats due to mis-information. The other two consoles are regularly seen as the 'generic' consoles, and the PS3 is the 'real deal'.

Thats what I've noticed anyway..

At least each console vendor now has had their turn in claiming some kind of victory and I'm glad Sony found a way to look at their figures hitting 50K in quite a positive light - so well done to all.

Now let's just keep an eye on that total consoles sold tally from here on in and see who's good and who's not. Vendors start your sales engines: just get them prices down, and quality up and let the best deals win!

Come on discount, discount, discount, bundle, bundle, bundle, give freebies, freebies, freebies - you can do it! Buy some exclusives, pump out those great games, lift lift lift that quality, lower them failure rates, chuck in 10 movies, throw in a free DS/PSP, and extend those warranties! Now breath and do it all again Woo hoo! icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif icon_lol.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_wink.gif

I know one other person who has already bought a PS3. My boss at work was asking me about the PS3 because he was disappointed with his 360.
I have also convinced two other people to buy one later this year by simply showing them a video of Little Big Planet.
