SOCOM: Confrontation announced

PS3 News | The PlayStation Network heats up.
Sony has announced that a new SOCOM title is on its way to the PlayStation 3. The game, titled SOCOM Confrontation, was revealed at Sony's Gamers Day, and will apparently be an online-only title that will be sold online and on a Blu-ray disk.

You'll be able to form clans in the game and customise their uniforms. There will also be a number of playable special forces from around the world. The game should be out before the end of 2007.

So.. Sony start their first major move down the path of their ultimate vision of the future: eliminating the retail middleman.

icon_eh.gif As far as I know Sony, MS and Nintendo are all distributing content over their respective online stores.

And plus this is coming out on Blu-ray disc as well, so spare us your melodramatic, and fundamentally incorrect, trolling.

SOCOM did big things for the PS2 and will probably have the same effect for the PS3. Not my cup of tea however.

What can I say. You had my respect on these boards till that very moment. Why not get off your high horse and keep things civil? Just because you dont agree with me, doesn't necessitate an unfounded personal attack to be in order. Discussion forums are for just that: discussion. If you dont see eye to eye.. prove me wrong. Otherwise, take your snide remarks to a social environment like a tavern and see what sort of 'feedback' they will get you..

A Virtual Console game or Microtransaction is one thing, but distributing entire games online yourself (thereby effectively cutting out a retailer) is completely another and will be a problem for you and me. In this scenario, Sony can attach any asking price they choose - hence my monopoly statement.

So i'll end with this: Do you want to retract your inappropriate comment and start again, or do you wish to stick to your current practice of 'making friends'? The choice is yours.

^ you don't agree that its melodramatic?? Online purchasing of movies, music and games is slowly becoming the the norm, desired by every console maker out there.

And if you want to talk about retailers getting stiffed then why not acknowledge:

1)EMI and Universal are cutting out retailers by offering their music online.

2)Foxtel offering rented movies to be downloaded, cutting out Blockbuster and Video Ezy.

3)Valve and Eidos for pushing for there games to be bought through their own online channel.

Apologies if you took offence but I have no idea why your usual good posting would lead you to choose to randomally mention this in a thread and accuse only one of the three console makers of being evil.

And besides, this is only an online playable game. Online distribution makes perfect sense to me in this case.

Agreed. If anything, its stupid that its being released on Blu-Ray too. Why would someone who's PS3 isn't hooked up to the PSN want this game on Blu-Ray anyway? Its online only icon_razz.gif EDIT: whoops, didnt notice you had mentioned that..

And Steam has been around for ages, and is starting to get new titles at an alarming rate nowadays. Digital distribution though imho is the future, embrace it or you'll fall behind really.. development studios love it, and for good reason. Consumers love it too, its the benefits of pirated software (low price, no CD/DVD required, downloads straight to your PC etc) with that touch of legality really. And if anything is going to combat the growing problem of PC game piracy, its digital distribution (and slightly less-so on consoles)..

End of rant icon_rolleyes.gif

I'm yet to buy a full game for the PS3, 360 or Wii online from the companies responsible for making the hardware themselves. Have you?

Im not talking about retailers getting stiffed either. The consumer will get stiffed. Making money from music took a downward spin the moment MP3 compression took on a mainstream appeal. Places like the RIAA knew this and that's why they so aggressively pursue people who illegally download music. Movies, etc.. take backseat to this discussion because quite frankly, my focus is on the effect it will have, should it (limiting purchase of console games online from a respective hardware company) become an accepted / forced norm for console gaming.

You can't honestly tell me that priced digital distribution for current generation console games is practiced in the industry at the moment, let alone what sort of benefits it will offer to the consumer (apart from being able to sit on your ass and let your fitness and health drop into the negatives - which is ideally no real benefit at all). Personally, the notion itself scares me. In the end, it means less choices for us and more power to hardware companies who are in it for profits. Let's face it.. it is obvious from incidents in the past that such companies arent apparently gallant in obtaining said profits either. That's the alarming thing. Whilst still employed at Sony, Kutaragi said himself that the PS4 is envisaged to be digital distribution only.. no hard media. Doesnt this scare you too?

Between you and me.. id rather have the choice to spend money on something physical that mere data. Call me old fashioned, but the choice should be there.

At no point in my prior posts in this thread, did I accuse any of the 'Big 3' of being "evil". I refuse to get drawn into the branding war companies enjoy inciting. As a consumer I have the freedom to enjoy any and all that each have to offer instead of falling into false rivalry with people that dont share the same interests as I.

I am just saying that it's bad news for people like you and me, and my first post entailing the matter was meant to be overboard interms of talking of a foreboding future to come (i would have liked Alec Guinness to have voiced it, Obi-Wan style). Its how I have fun..

Then its a shame Blizzard didnt conform to the same strategy. They'd be able to buy half the planet if they did that. Yet they didnt... makes you wonder why?

The answer is freedom and less restriction to the consumer. The result? Loyalty..

Apology accepted; but it wasnt the melodramatic part that insulted me.. it was being likened to an internet troll; ie.. one who posts rubbish to garner attention, that did it.

^ Ok mate, i do see where your getting, but I would like to point out a few things.

Blizzard are only allowing WoW to be sold in stores because that is where the most exposure of games lie. The fact that they gain all their money from monthly subsricptions suggests that they needn't bother creating an online distribution channel for the initial game.

Also, in the future, having games available for download isn't that big of a deal. I honestly don't see where the loss to consumers is. Costs of production (including distribution, royalties, printing, retailer costs) will decrease and competition will still exist between consoles. The oppurtunity cost of consumers will also decrease. Just go home and download.

If anything, online distribution will help lower prices. It actually makes me think back to a research assignment i had to do to analyse the effect of the internet on a few markets (including airline tickets and such).
