Parappa the Rappa creator: PS3 is too big

PS3 News | Size the reason behind lagging sales in Japan.
Numerous theories have been expounded over why Nintendo's Wii continues to outsell Sony's PlayStation 3, yet NanaOn-Sha boss Masaya Matsuura reckons it could all be down to one thing: the PS3 is too big, at least for the Japanese market.

Chatting to GamesIndustry.biz at the Nordic Game conference, Matsuura argued that, "[The PlayStation 3] is too big for the Japanese," though he did also admit that "Sony has a chance to recover over time." Matsuura clearly likes his consoles dinky though, as he lambasted the Xbox 360 for its bulky AC adapter.

Parappa's daddy also revealed that NanaOn-Sha was currently planning a Wii title. "Already I've been starting to think about Wii software, but it's very hard sometimes," he said. "Can you keep shaking the controller for hours? Players can't spend a long time on gameplay, so this can be tough. So I respect Nintendo's activities, but for software designers like us, it's very hard."

For more from Matsuura, head to our recent interview with the man himself.

The PS3 is pretty big and bulky, but at least its all built in. And then again, the 360's massive PSU doesn't bother me, I just hide it away.

But can Sony really make the PS3 any smaller? They heat it puts out needs somewhere to go, if it was anymore crammed..

Now we understand why software designers make lousy hardware designers.

The original PS2 was 301mm x 78mm x 182mm (W x H x D) and the PS3 specifications are 325mm x 98mm x 274mm.

So its not remarkably larger (although 9 cm deeper) so where is the common sense in the comment?

Lots of "unusual" things happen in Japan basically if Wii is the flavour of the month good luck to them.

Maybe simple games appeal to their sense of adventure. Maybe the Wii remote typifies their culture?

But suggesting its not selling because of the aesthetics is a bit far fetched.

Maybe price might have a small (icon_razz.gif) influence don't you think?

Going by those dimensions the PS3 is more than twice as big (volume wise)!
PS2 = 4,273cm3
PS3 = 8,727cm3

The Saturn was quite the behemoth (compared to the PS1 and N64) and that still did surprisingly well in Japan.. better than most Western markets.

I prefer my devices to be on the smaller side too, but I'm not going to miss out on Final Fantasy XIII because of it. And I doubt the Japanese will either.

i guess size might be a reason in japan >.> the size put me off the original xbox so who knows oO... but if only they bloody lowered the price

LIES!!!! The Japanese love big things like Godzilla

But yeah I think its the games moreso than the size of the machine.

Yeah, size isn't important, its how you use it that matters icon_shifty.gif

Still the PS3 is pretty huge. I still think its price.

The Saturn was pretty small if you compare it to the Xbox but at the same time, the Saturn did better in Japan as most of its titles were more the Japanese titles.

(1) No games
(2) Corporate image (Sony has lost a lot of face & prestige)
(3) High Price
(4) Competition is performing well - Wii has filled the vacume (for the time being at least)

By the time you can choose a PS3 in white, red, silver & black ; the price will have come down, good games will be out, backward compatibility will be nice and Sony will have hopefully purchased some ethics. I suspect at this point it will sell very well.

Usually it wouldn't matter but if you've seen the size of the apartment that alot of students and younger people live in in Japan then you would understand how space is such an issue. It's actually quite normal to find a fairly large number of people living in absolutely tiny one room apartments because of how expensive housing is in tokyo and the other city areas. It's what happens when you have a high population living in s small area.

I can't picture Sony Releasing a Red PS3, unless they re-brand themselves Acer, strip down the system a little, and slap a Ferrari Badge on it.
