Tretton not concerned by slow PS3 sales

PS3 News | It's a marathon not a sprint, insists Sony boss.
Sony America President Jack Tretton has declared himself unconcerned by the fact that the PlayStation 3's sales figures are lagging behind those of its rivals. Sony's latest home console has fallen behind Nintendo's Wii in North America, Japan, Europe and Australasia, while Microsoft has benefited from the head start it gained by launching the Xbox 360 in late-2005.

Tretton is unmoved, however, telling the LA Times that, "We didn't get into PS3 for the first six months of 2007 - we're into this for the next 10 years and beyond. A million units one way or another at this point isn't going to worry us."

According to some sites the PS3 have sold 3 million consoles which is not a bad effort considering all the negativity and price.

^ I think their biggest obstacle is the price. Simple microeconomics will tell you that as price goes up, quantity demanded goes down.

People always buy the cheaper alternative. the PS3 can't win at that price, regardless of its quality.

I agree totally, I am saying with its price and negativity I only expected it to reach 2 million by June and saying its doing better than I expected.

I dont have a PS3 because of its price.

i can only wonder what sony will do to combat this, i cant see them slashing prices this early because thats not the sony way >.>

The question is when is it a good time to reduce the price? Probably Christmas 2007.

Having said that marketing products with a must have game at the same price is usually a better alternative (i.e. the GT3 PS2 bundle as a good example). Look for a bundle at AUD$995.

The PS3 still hasn't had its killer app released I suspect when that happens is the time to watch. If it doesn't result in sales increase its going to be a very long haul for Sony.

Blu ray may be its current noose but given blu ray movie sales in the US has jumped over 700% its a safe bet to say Hi Def movie technology is the next big wave. Win that important race and the world is your oyster.

Low cost competitor (Wii) with a tremendous amount of FUD around its capabilities isn't helping Sony's cause. Personally I think Sony and MS need to productively come up with a marketing campaign(s) that clearly distinguish itself to the general public. This isn't happening fast enough and I suspect these general gamers actually believe they are getting next generation gaming but in fact are not even close. Whether this has a detrimental effect sooner or later (i.e. when consumers realise its not "apples vs. apples") is anyone's guess.

The demos of the PS3 in JB and Myers for example is breath taking and really is I think the best way for Sony (and MS for that matter) to proceed. Public criticism of the Wii in my mind re-enforces in the consumer mind that they are competitors. Well they are but you don't see Mazda 2 ads comparing itself against Holden Commodore do you?

Again it shows a lack of maturity in the video game industry because there is no pidgeon hole for the Wii. The industry historically has last gen and next gen not an "in-between" gen. There is a market for sure the sales have exceeded expectations but there isn't a category for this level of gamer hence it gets put into the same bracket as the PS3 and Xbox 360. Which makes it difficult when the Wii is less than half the price of the PS3.

But as they say in sales "Perception is reality". Just need to tweak reality a little icon_wink.gif.

Microsoft wont be big in the masses this round. Kind of like how Gamecube was labled a kiddy's console, 360 has basically been labled a "hardcore" console which won't help their cause.

PS3 is way to expensive for the masses in its current form, $300-$400 is the amount most casuals I know all they want to pay for a console. Anything over $500 I don't see doing to well in the casual gamer market. By the time it gets that low, will it be too late? I don't think so but its possible.

As far as Blu-Ray? It helps and kills their cause at the same time.

the price will go down eventually and when it does the ps3 will pick up its sales, he completely right there wont be big sales for a while because the price wont go down to an accepted price for a while
