PS3 Saints Row scrapped

PS3 News | THQ preferring to focus on sequel.

THQ has announced in its quarterly conference call that it will no longer be releasing Saints Row on the PlayStation 3. The game, a free-roaming crime sim in the mould of Grand Theft Auto, has previously appeared on the Xbox 360 alone. Now, it looks like that won't change.

Instead, THQ is focusing its powers on getting a Saints Row sequel out on shop shelves for 2008, with company CEO Brian Farrell telling analysts, "We think the most important thing for the Saints Row franchise is to have a simultaneous ship into a larger installed base next year. We think the bigger opportunity is a multiplatform launch."

The follow-up will be appearing on both the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Guess they realised coming up against GTA IV that SR would have no chance. Hopefully they add some new stuff into SR2

Probably a smart move. Competing against GTA 4 would have made this decision. They can now produce an awesome follow up with slicker graphics.

I hope they port it eventually. Even though from what I heard it's apparently not that brilliant, it would still be nice to have it on the PS3.

It's not worth buying a 360 for. It's was a reasonably good game a year ago, but I think it's safe to say that GTA4 will be good enough for this not to be missed on PS3. SR is formulaic and doesn't really push the 360's hardware at all.

While slightly disappointing it really is the best move they could of made. Like others have said, it was a nice enough title but it lacked direction or any really defining features out side of a better looking GTA with better physics. SR2 should be good because they are building on a solid enough game though.

Funny, I only found out it was coming to PS3 yesterday... must be the whole GTA thing, although I like Saints Row for different reasons to GTA, the focus is obviously different... I prefer killing in Saints Row but prefer driving in San Andreas.

I should probably buy Saints Row.

Seriously, this is no big loss. I have it on my 360 and its pretty meh. The overly try hard GANGSTA sh!t is so annoying and its just a GTA clone. Still, its better than most, ie True Crime.
Lookin forward to a sequal tho, hopefully this time they'll get it right. Although i can see this one being hampered by the 360, too... the devs said they couldn't put planes or helicopters in the first one cozy of no HDD.

Not for a while, and not while the 120GB is over $200, but I think that it will happen. Microsoft don't want the games to be better on PS3, and if they use a killer app like GoW2 as the first mandatory HDD game, they also stand to make a lot of $ off the HDD's as well.

They really should have hired another development team to port it for them and the main development team could have focused on a port.

Also someone told me this game was exclusive to XBOX360, they must have been wrong or no one would be talking about this right now.

Also they made a mobile phone version, but in most cases that usually dosen't count.

Plus! PS3 has a fair bit more power than the xbox360, although I won't be getting either since I don't have enough money at the moment. But I'm planning to get some more money to continue upgrading my computer so hopefully they might think about releasing a PC version.

More straight forward reason for cancelling it is there just aren't that many PS3 owners out there to actually justify porting it over. An immenant GTA4 can't help though.

Meh at Saints Row being cancelled for PS3 - I own the 360 version so whether it ever did come out or not wasn't going to concern me.

As for SR 2 finally being announced officially, awesome!

It should have been already released by now, they've have had more then enough time to port it over.It would have been a real nice ace in the ps3's suite, it's A grade game(not A+) and would have been nice to wet the appetites of those craving gta4.

It's a top game, and is sony's loss for not having it.

When the game was still only close to release, and I was spending a bit of time cruising the official SR forums for tasty morsels of news, the official reason given by the devs for no planes/helos was time constraints. The said it was something they wanted in there, and would definitely try to get into the sequel (if there was one, and we now know there is).

Bring it on I say! I had heaps of fun in SR, which was a great game (even though most people are too busy trying to say 'LOL' '***' and 'GTA CLONE' at the same time to notice this). Hopefully they weren't just blowing smoke, and we actually get bikes/planes/etc. this time around - and a little more backstory perhaps? Either way I reckon it'll be a solid title and I'll be getting it for sure.

Uh, no, Jibbs, no planes or helicopters coz of no HDD is a fact, Volition said it in an interview in an issue of the official PlayStation mag. It's also a problem that R* have talked about too.

Not sure if it would be classified as irony, but its good to see that these forums still attract the same level of stupidity as when I last logged on. SR did have helicopters in it (even in high definition) but obviously everything else was only in SD or would have needed a bigger hard drive. As for my view on the game I will just echo GTPod's sentiments as they pretty much reflect mine. But I will say that its still fun as is GTA3.

Well if you're going to list non-pilotable vehicles then Saints Row had planes too - or at least one plane. Boats too.
Nothing more than window dressing when you can't 'drive' them though (although RPGing helos was mighty satisfying).

You know what amuses me slightly - the fact that some Playstation magazine out now has Saints Row on the cover. Sucks to be them I guess.

There was irony, actually. Irony in the form that it was a quote from an interview in the Official Playstation magazine. I'm not denying that the lack of a HDD with the Core package may be hindering developers adding content or whatever, but when what is essentially a negative comment is made towards any console from a competitor's official magazine, the comments should be taken with a grain of salt. For the record, Rockstar's comments were also made in an interview with a Playstation magazine, so there you go. Also, don't get so bloody defensive next time.
