20GB PS3 dropped by some US stores

PS3 News | Including Sony's official online shop.
It's looking increasingly likely that the 20GB "budget" version of the PlayStation 3 may never truly get off the ground, after several North American retailers stopped stocking the console over the last week. Best Buy, GameStop and Electronics Boutique stores in the US no longer sell the lower-end PS3, which never even made it to PAL territories.

Indeed, GamesIndustry.biz reports that Sony's very own online store, SonyStyle, is also no longer selling the machine, instead offering only the 60GB model. "The line-up [at SonyStyle] is decided based on market demand and so it's not surprising that they are not selling it on their website," SCEI spokesperson Satoshi Fukuoka told IDG News. "But if you go to a retailer you can find it."

As it is, the chances of a PAL launch for the less popular 20GB version of the console are growing slimmer with each day.

Not suprised, the basic model of the Xbox 360 isn't sold in most places anymore...

Who want's 3/4 of a PS3?

I don't like the gimped "value" versions of consoles.

Perhaps a PS3 Ultimate (elite) is on the way icon_razz.gif

Sarcasm aside, I find it odd that they're killing off this SKU... Perhaps they're losing more money on the lower SKU than the proper one.

LOL. Maybe it will have 3 gigabit ethernet ports, 2 HDMI ports, Compact Flash and SD slots, standard WiFi, support for 7 controllers and perfect PS2 back compat.

Oh wait, those were the PS3 specs when the 360 was released.

Did the gimped version ever have a PAL release date to begin with?

What are you smoking? I see the core 360 in lots of places

Anyways I remember hearing that Sony was going to ditch it altogether due to costs or something

One can only hope this leads to the end of vendors offering different models in terms of capacity and features.

I'm not in favour of either the MS and Sony strategy to address the issue of cost.

BTW I don't believe the Wii should be the answer either (sort of last gen hardware mix) but since its selling well I'm probably in the minority.

Well i'm glad that they are going to stop selling the core model, ps3 has already claimed to have made the ultimate machine and that doesnt involve the core.

I dont think they will ever release an 'elite' like the 360, but i think they have a history of releasing an upgraded version after a couple of years anyway right?

I always said the core version of the Ps3 and the 360 was a waste of time. The Ps3 more so because it's actually got less hardware that you cannot upgrade unlike the core version of the 360 where you can actually buy a wireless controller and a hdd if you choose.
