Australian PlayStation 3 sales announced

PS3 News | More than 25,000 consoles sold.
It's taken a while, but Australian PlayStation 3 sales performance figures are finally available. The results, courtesy of GfK, reveal that 27,083 PlayStation 3s were sold in ten days.

"Our data revealed that in a matter of just ten days the PlayStation 3 created a spike in retail spending not previously witnessed at the launch of any other console in Australia," stated GfK's Daniel Morse. "This spending continued into the second week of trading, resulting in sales of 27,083 PlayStation 3 consoles."

By way of comparison, smh.com.au has published the GFK figures for the comparable period of the other consoles on the market. They show that for the 11 day period after its Australian launch, the Nintendo Wii had sold 41,369 units, and the Xbox 360 36,627.

SCE Australia managing director Michael Ephraim also chirped in, stating that, "Following a great launch for the PS3 across the country, it’s very satisfying for us to see that our close planning with retail and channel partners has ensured that all consumers wanting to get their hands on a PS3."

The PlayStation 2 is selling rather well also, with 7,954 units sold between the 19th and 26th of March.

Hey that's not too bad. It's still got a fair way to go to catch up to the Wii and the 360 and i'm also curious as to how long it can keep up the momentum that has started with the launch. Maybe if it sells well they'll lower the price by christmas and I might buy one.

If it sells well, they'll keep the price. They will lower the price before Christms, who wouldn't?

It's good considering that the price of the console is massive. Well done Sony.

i'm very happy for sony to be able to sell consoles at that price, just shows that people see the value before the dollar

By way of comparison ... the 11 day period after its Australian launch, the Nintendo Wii had sold 41,369 units, and the Xbox 360 36,627.
I am obviously missing something terribly obvious, but could someone tell me how those figures are all that and a can of peaches? The way I see it the PS3 sold 9,544 less than the x360, and 14,286 less than Wii.

Pretty sad considering they moved 20k in the first day.

It's because of the huge pricetag. The Wii is $400 whilst the PS3 is $1000. So can you see whilst even wit the HUGE price tag selling that much was an accomplishment?

^Bingo was his nameo. The revenue acquired by Sony was alot more impressive than what the other two achieved.

Except they take a loss on each console sold don't they? though less of a loss in PAL land since they cost cut production and sell for much more.

^ Whilst true, it is beside the point.

The point is that the Playstation brand got the most money out of the public.

possible because it cost $1000!

oh rite.. the money. Ok. I must have had a brain fart there. I was looking at the numbers in the article and was all "huh?". But yes, it does also specifically say spending, not numbers moved.

Thanks for that, I thought I was missing something!

So because I totally suck @ math (batman has Joker, I have math) is there a cost comparison yet? Seems SONY would have made more money on their launch than Ninty or M$, but would be cool to know just how much more money.

Here ya go HeDanny. In order of most consoles sold to least consoles sold.

Wii - 41369 sold at $400 = $16,547,600

360 - 36627 sold at $574.95(Assuming 50/50 ratio of core and premium sold) = $21,058,693

PS3 - 27083 sold at $1000 = $27,083,000

Now do the profits for each company icon_wink.gif

You can't tell what the profits are. The only thing we do know is that:

The Wii was sold at a profit in every region. Considering the price here verses the price in a Japan... Nintendo made a tidy sum.

The 360 was sold at a loss initially. So for the launch window Microsoft made a lost. It was more of a 66-75/25-33 split premium/core at launch.

The PS3 is being sold at a loss. So Sony is lost money this launch.

That's pretty decent numbers considering the price of the console though I'm doubtful Sony can keep that momentum going. Though all the consoles are going through a quiet phase atm so it might not be too damaging.

Well, that's why it's described as "revenue" and not as "net profit". When it comes right down to it, Sony's already spent the 'lost' money by manufacturing and shipping those PS3s - it's not like they'll lose even more if people pay money for them now.

...So getting people to spend so much money on their product is still a reasonably noteworthy achievement. Having said that, Sony's new habit of boasting about total revenue instead of unit numbers is getting a bit annoying.

(As PR spin goes, it replaces the old "shipped versus sold" argument, basically icon_confused.gif )
