FFXIII PS3 exclusivity in doubt

PS3 News | Yet another game going multiplatform?
Sony Computer Entertainment France President, Georges Fornay, has hinted in French newspaper Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace that Final Fantasy XIII's exclusivity is in doubt.

"The development costs of games have exploded, and it has become more difficult to have exclusives, outside of our own games. But we have for launch day 30 games, including MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Virtua Fighter 5. Moreover, we are expecting 200 games by the end of 2007... As far as Final Fantasy XIII goes, I can tell you that the exclusivity is in discussion." stated Fornay.

It's certainly a bizarre statement for Sony France's top man to make, but with Devil May Cry 4, Ace Combat 6 and Saint's Row recently becoming multiplatform, it seems more and more likely this console generation battle is going to be decided by first-party exclusives.

The exec team of key publishing houses suddenly have greater leverage to renegotiate terms with Sony, knowing that the company will give them their blood to hold on to critical content that drives their console sales.

I dont think Sony can afford to lose FF or MGS so they are about to get sucked almost dry by two very thirsty publishers. It's business. icon_twisted.gif

If that's the case, bye-bye Sony. MGS4 can't save you alone.

If sony lose this game, then they have lost the entire console war. This is currenty the only BIG title (no white knight, admiester, LOL) That is keeping the other companies worried.

And if this goes 360, then sony are ****. And when MGS4 goes to 360, sony will have like no exclusives left (besides tekken, which is rumoured that it could go multiconsole)

I think if Final Fantasy 13 goes 360, Metal Gear Solid 4 will follow suit. Things aren't looking good I fear.
No doubt in my mind that will happen.

Then after 360 sells really well i japan because of this, i would also think tekken 6 would jump ship and go multiconsole. Thus leaving sony with no big titles left.

PS3 is starting to sound like GC all over again LOL.

All we can do is hope now.

Methinks this is a Sony marketing ploy- make it look like they struggled really hard to keep Final Fantasy on Playstation, and won out against "the might of Microsoft." There's no other reason a Sony exec would release that kind of information voluntarily.

Fair point there Brett. I was getting a bit worried reading that article, I really hope it stays exclusive!

People are making losing exclusivity sound like losing a franchise altogether. I don't see how increased choice and access to games is anything but a win for gamers. Also, FFXIII and MGS4 are massive titles but don't forget about God of War III, Gran Turismo 5, and whatever masterpiece team ICO dish up next.

Losing exclusivity on a couple of games in no way spells the doom of the PS3. If it does, then something is surely wrong with the console in the first place.

Its not as if it will become an exclusive on the 360. The PS3 will still have the game.

"Dude you are forgeting that they are first party. They will only go to another company if sonys game division goes bankrupt.

Honeslty i doubt this is a marketing scheme. Fair enough point. But square are not a stupid company. And Final Fantasy is more popular outside of japan (america loving it) Hense why if they move to 360 as well, there will be more sales. And espically with hironbu sakaguchi saying that they should."

Well multiplatforming in this case is bad for Sony, it's much better for gaming in general as things like this can promote more Japanese developers release games overseas.

gotta agree it seems like a marketting ploy - I mean, when FF jumped ship from nintendo they had a good reason, and they stated it, not to mention sony would fight tooth, claw, nail, backbone, and big club-thingy to hang onto it if someone did try to take it anyway

Actually that was kind of my point - sorry it wasn't more explicit. Losing exclusivity on games like this will admittedly take some of the wind out of their sales, but it doesn't mean that Sony have nothing left to draw people to their system.

The only reason I can see to ferverently hope that FFVIII sticks to a single platform is if multiplatforming it compromises the quality of the game.

I think you're a bit late for that one. icon_lol.gif

However, I agree with what you're saying. Aside from being used to FF games being on Sony consoles, I don't like the effects that multiplatforming can have on games. They can end up seeming rushed and unfinished, and neither version really has any special features to distinguish it from the other. All in all, it just reduces the amount of effort that the developer can put into the game, which generally means a crappier output.

I could only play a (modern) Final Fantasy game on a Sony console. Playing it on an Xbox 360 would just feel so wrong. It belongs on the Playstation.

^ I agree, and gamers can always make a stand on this kind of thing can't we? don't agree with FF/DMC/other big series on 360? buy it for the PS3 instead. gamers can have significant influence if they really want to...

I would hope most gamers (especially those on this site) see what this is what it is: Sony losing exclusives because they've made very bad decisions and wont/don't have a big enough market share to keep such a large support. The PS2 would NEVER have had this problem- porting FF12 to thee XBOX probably would have made them no money at all. Why support a console that isn't as popular or 'good' at the current time? Buy 360 and show Sony they need to try harder and fast.

Ha! Gamers united against more choice in gaming! That's hilarious!

They are supremely boned if they lose this.It will open th floodgates for other sony big guns to jump ship(like mgs4).

I mean, if you have a 360, why would you need to buy a ps3?To play the big name sony exclusives of course........that is if sony have any left.It has already started with v5 and dmc4 coming multiplatform.

Sony have what 3-4 great first party games (come on Killzone is crap, and compared to halo pathetic. Reviews agree. gamerankings 77%)

If FF did **** you would see both MGS and tekkn jump i believe. I want it to leave sony, FF need rumble.

WTF is this "Final Fantasy would only feel right on a Playstation" crap? And this "stand up against good business decisions that benefit gamers! Support the PS3 which is losing all of this because of its bad decisions" crap. Damn, some of you, well....

(yeah, yeah, Jibbs has used it before. I know)

I really don't want to see it ending up on the 360 because i think it will have a massive negative effect on the ps3. It would be like Gears of War coming on the ps3. Sony needs it's exclusives to survive imo. Ohh well time will tell.

Sorry to double post but i just relised what would happen if Final Fantasy did go on xbox. How many dvds would it use??? Because when ffxiii is coming on ps3 it will be on blue ray taking up how many gig?????

That might be a problem imo but who knows. With all the HD vides in FFXIII what's going to happen

Sony will never use up a whole bluray disk for a game.
