"More than 10,000" people pre-order PS3 in Oz

PS3 News | Interesting figures.
While Sony has kept pretty hush on the amount of PlayStation 3s that have been pre-ordered in Australia to date, Sony Australia and New Zealand managing director Michael Ephraim has now stated that "more than 10,000" people have preordered the console.

Speaking to the Courier Mail, Ephraim provided the first real glimpse into just how many PlayStation 3 consoles had been pre-ordered around the country. "More than 10,000" isn't an overly impressive figure, and if true would mean that stocks of the new console should be plentiful come the launch in just a few hours.

Well well. The chances of the PS3 not selling out are rising. That's not many preorders!

Not too crash hot. Didn't they say a few weeks ago that preorders had "already exceeded 11k"??

I'm curious? Who remembers the 360's and Wii's preorder numbers??

It could just be an older interview, and there's no way of knowing exactly how many pre-orders there are anyway.

The only figure that matters is sales, and we'll find out how that went next week.

10k probably means around 11,000 units or something. Otherwise they'd go larger in their PR Department. icon_razz.gif

I'm kinda interested to see what the 360 and Wii preorder numbers were in comparison, but at the same time I don't think it makes a lot of difference. I believe the Wii would have sold just as many units if preorders weren't taken. Most people just expect the system to be there when they walk into the store. I also wouldn't assume that everyone who preordered a PS3 will definitely pick up the system (some of those preorders could be 6 months old), so you can't even say that "Well, they've sold at least 10,000 already then."

Even though I expect the system to sell well in its first few days, I don't think it'd mean the end of the world if it didn't. The price point is a real kicker, and casual gamers who only heard about the system launch a few weeks ago probably need more time to get the money together. I only scrounged up the dough a week or so back, and if I hadn't been able to, I'd probably have been waiting around for a decent interest-free payment plan to crop up.

We preordered a Wii, but there wasn't any shortages where we are, so it wouldn't have mattered if we hadn't. Got a Wii carry bag out of it though, so there's something to be said for the activity. icon_smile.gif
