PS3 backwards compatibility site live

PS3 News | 1,782 of 2,451 PS2 games work. Do yours?
Those hoping for a sneak peak at what PlayStation 2 games they'll be able to play on their PlayStation 3 come Friday are in for a bit of luck - Sony has gone live with the website where you can find out if your games will be playable on March 23.

Sony's semi-official blog ThreeSpeech claims that 1,782 of 2,451 games work. To get anything working though, you'll need to upgrade your PlayStation 3's firmware to 1.6, which can be done by connecting to the PlayStation network when you pick up your console on launch.

Any game not appearing on the list is currently incompatible, we're scouring the list now and titles which will have intermittent problems include FIFA 2004, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2, God Hand, Grand Theft Auto Vice City Stories, Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Jak I, II & III, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone, SingStar (Luke dies a little inside), and Okami.

Pathetic effort. There's a lot of games in the list but most of them only work with major issues! FFX/X-2, Okami, God Hand and Soul Calibur are examples.

So 1 Bar is not good right? If so quite a few of my favorite games aren't playable.

That's right, 1 bar = virtually unplayable.

No Guitar Hero, not entirely unexpected though. Suikoden I and II work so I'm happy enough. No listing at all for Suikoden IV though, and I actually like that one. Fahrenheit is a goer but no Shaolin Monks. I'm at about 50/50 so far, list could use a search function like the US version - naturally even the PAL BC list itself is inferior and scaled down from the o/s one.

Edit: Since my game collection is quite small I have already came up with my overall works/dont list and I've come up fairly well - 16 that do work to 7 that don't. Disappointed to see games like Canis Canem Edit, GTA: SA and WWE Smackdown VS Raw 2007 with issues but hey, at least they'll run and I'm sure they're working on it like with the fixes noted on the US list.

"You avoid the use of "60Hz" and network modes (which may experience noticeable graphical corruption not present in the main game)"

Yeah nice work Sony. Basically saying that your emulation will be slow and crappy.

OK. Here's a list of my PAL games.

Most of them are older games (since most of my newer games are imports). You would probably expect a higher-than-average compatibility-rate for older games, so I was optimistic.

- Jak and Daxter: Not Listed/Supported
- Jak II: Intermittent Issues
- Jak 3: Intermittent Issues
- Singstar Legends: Intermittent Issues
- Guitar Hero: Not Listed/Supported
- Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater (82013): Intermittent Issues
- God Of War: No Known Issues
- Ratchet and Clank: Not Listed/Supported
- Ratchet and Clank 2: Not Listed/Supported
- Ratchet and Clank 3: Not Listed/Supported
- Final Fantasy X: Intermittent Issues
- We Love Katamari: No Known Issues
- Shadow of the Colossus: No Known Issues

So, that's:
5 out of 13 games which aren't supported
5 out of 13 games with intermittent issues
3 out of 13 games that work perfectly

So, 3 of 13 work perfectly, and 8 of 13 work to some degree.

I'm not really sure if that's a good or bad compatibility rate. It's certainly less than I was expecting.

It's a bit better than what I was expecting... but then again, my expectations weren't very much in the first place - hopefully 1 bar will actually be playable to a reasonable extent?
Yeah it isnt as bad as i thought, but whats all this about skipping FMV sequecnces? Does that mean no more enjoying cut scenes.?
Hopefully the can improve the list and quality of the games more with future updates.

Using the power of SCIENCE (and the Windows calculator) I DISCOVERED that 1188 games are within the 2-3 bar range. This matches Phil Harrison's original comment (over 1000 games will be playable)... so perhaps they haven't been working on the compatablility at all, and just lowered their standards. icon_biggrin.gif

(Seriously. I just calculated two-thirds of the number, so this isn't really that reliable.)

Rez, not listed. icon_shifty.gif I was going to keep my PS2 anyway.

As for the rest of my games (least those I'm likely to play):
God Hand, 1 bar
Gradius V, not listed
FFXII, 2 bars
Shadow of the Collosus, 3 bars
ICO, 3 bars
Shin Megami Tensei: Lucifer's Call, 2 bars
Street Fighter Alpha Anthology, 3 bars
Guilty Gear XX Reload, 3 bars
Gitaroo Man, 3 bars
Okami, 1 bars
Tekken 5, 3 bars
Way of the Samurai, not listed
Way of the Samurai 2, 2 bars (not likely to play this as I found the first more fun to play, but found it interesting)
We Love Katamari, 3 bars
Zone of the Enders, 1 bar
Zone of the Enders 2, not listed
Devil May Cry, 3 bars
Devil May Cry 3, 3 bars (hahah Devil May Cry 2 has 1 bar)
Dragon Quest - Journey of the Cursed King, 3 bars
Virtua Fighter 4, 2 bars.

4 not listed.
3 with notable issues.
3 with minor issues.
10/20 with no issues is better than I expected really. Compared with 360's 1 plays with issues, other not supported (Ninja Gaiden Black, Jet Set Radio Future respectively - everything else I had finished playing and don't want to return to, i.e. Kotor, Jade Empire, etc. these may work though), it's not bad. I think they've updated Ninja Gaiden Black since then though.

Alpha Anthology, WOOT, at least there 2d fighter support is better then MS

Ha! I can't even load into the website as the server is getting hammered.
NORT EVAN THERE WEBSITS WORKS PORPERLY!!1~! LOLZ!!@ icon_rolleyes.gif

At the very least, SoTC, We <3 Katamari, and God of War work 'without issues' (going off earlier posts). That means at least some of the games I really enjoy will work on BC, unlike the current state of MS' BC - where approximately none of my favourite games work.

I don't know, I guess that I'm not all that disappointed because I wasn't expecting much in the first place? This will be subject to post-posting outrage though, once I can actually read the list myself icon_razz.gif

I am completely suprised that SingStar isn't 100% supported, and to a lesser extent Guitar Hero.

1,782 of 2,451 PS2 games work I think that's an amazing acheivement in such short time. I original heard it was 1200 of ps1 and ps2 games. Just imagine if you give sony more time they will be fixing more games.

3 bars = no known issues to date.

Does this mean the game will work perfectly, or at least very-very-near-perfectly?

EDIT
Games I have with 3 bars: all ace combats, bloody roar 4, capcom vs snk 2, chaos legion, eve of extinction, mgs3 subsistence, mk:armageddon,
Games I have with 2 bars: final fantasy 12 (disappointing), Tai Fu (my only PS1 game)
Games I have with 1 bar: final fantasy x and x-2 (very disappointing), marvel vs capcom 2,
Games I have that weren't listed: dead or alive 2, both shadow hearts

Final Comments: I was suprised that EOE is among the top playable games, and that the FFs were much lower, and that DOA2 was not even listed. But honestly, I'm quite disappointed in this BC list by Sony. Very bad move removing the chip that would have given all games all 3 bars!

My Recommended Conclusion: Keep your PS2 and hook it up via the most powerful connection possible for you (for me, Component), enjoy your games and FMVs at 60Hz, and play happy. icon_smile.gif At least until all of your fav games have 3 bars.

To have the best experience when playing your PlayStation®2 titles, we recommend that:

You avoid connecting any non-essential USB peripherals to your PS3

You avoid the use of "60Hz" and network modes (which may experience noticeable graphical corruption not present in the main game)

You should skip optional FMV sequences (a small number of games have graphical corruption in one or more video sequences).

A maximum of seven players can play (non-network) multiplayer PS2 games.
Does this apply to even the games with 3 bars? I was gonna hold off on getting a Ps3 because I wanted to play God of War II (problem free).....but looking at that list it looks like God of War II will work well but I really don't want it to have any FMV or 60Hz issues.

Anyone know for sure?

Looks like it's time to import a PS3 and save some serious money seeing as I have to keep my PS2 to play most games anyway.

I would of imported a ps3 but the warranty issue stopped me, and the fact you can't play any aussie ps1,2 games and blue ray movies. icon_smile.gif

Well 3 of the 4 PS2 games I kept work with no known issues (GTA 3, GTA: LCS & SFA) and one has major issues (GTA:SA)

So 3 out of 4 isn't bad

It's interesting a number of big name titles have major issues. Plus it seems a number of EA titles in particular their sports titles and most of the NFS range have issues also.

OH NO, Sony hates EA icon_lol.gif

The warranty isn't much of an issue, really. As for not playing PAL PS1 and PS2 games, that's why I'm keeping my PS2. The Blu-Ray movie bit can actually be an adantage, you can get them cheaper and earlier! icon_smile.gif

Given that it's using software emulation that's a pretty decent list, I was expecting a lot less this early on.
Pity Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner isn't on the list icon_sad.gif hope they fix it.

It's a nice fat number, but I think it's a very poor effort. Having games with 1 bar seems to me it will be a pile of crap and be unplayable. I would prefer to see 1/2 that number and get rid of this stupid 'bar' system, which is a friggin joke. If they support a game, it should be 99% emulated perfect IMO.

This FMV/60Hz is a biggy IMO. If you can only play games at 50Hz it's a friggin joke.
