Sony may yet change Sixaxis

PS3 News | After making up with Immersion.
Love is a fickle thing. Just days after it kissed and made up with controller rumble specialists Immersion, Sony's Jack Tretton has admitted that the firm may yet consider a redesign of the PlayStation 3's rumble-less Sixaxis controller.

Speaking to GameTrailers, Tretton revealed that, "You will see peripherals coming from SCEA that will address the interests of the consumer. I don't have anything to tell you specifically, but we're open to changing the Sixaxis controller."

Let's just hope it isn't that last generation rumble feature, eh Jack?

So they'll magically figure out how to incorporate rumble (although such a development would be totally unrelated to a recent lawsuit settlement), and then they'll find a way of combining it with games in a truly revolutionary, next-gen way?

Wait, I thought rumble was last gen so I hate all consoles that have it. I'm confused Sony, please tell me what I want!

well, Immersion did say not long ago that they had an idea to fix it, so technically the reasoning Sony can make public is already there:
"OMG, we totally didn't think of doing it that way. Thanks Captain Immersion, you've saved us once again!"

even if us cynical (some might say: informed) types know the real reason.

eh if only sony had pushed the release date even longer we might be even able to get ahold of the new controllers with the rumble feature >.>

Technically their statement about not being able to do rumble with the sixaxis motion sensing was correct.

They couldn't do it without violating immersion's patents...

Or not. PAL regions have waited long enough. If they waited any longer, they almost could give up hope of PS3 being a success here. It's already come very late, IMO.

As for changing the controller, I'm all for that. We want rumble, and we'd better get it! I'm not sure what else they could to change the controller, maybe they could fix the triggers a bit.

This is kinda bad for PS3. As much as I want rumble back, this'd create a divide in controllers, kinda like when PSone went analog. Not that rumble is as big a difference, and I know many who hates it.

This is a good thing, Sony is tweaking the controller to enhance the gaming experience alongside the "Next Generation" hardware.
Whereas, Nintendo can tweak the Wiimote but doesn't have the hardware to run it.

A good day for Sony indeed.

i don't really think there'll be such a divide though.

the divide between PS Controller, and PS Analogue was a gulf, but this was mainly because the control method was extremely different.

the gulf then between the PS Analogue, and the Dual-Shock was minimal, as they were the same controller, with a tactile feature added. the vibration didn't add anything in terms of controlling the game, only experiencing it. (god that sounded wanky.)

likewise there should be next to no difference between a SIXAXIS controller, and a SIXAXIS SHOCK controller, except the addition of the tactile response.

in the end, it might make a bit of difference to gameplay, but consider how many PSX or PS2 games actually used the vibration to deliver some gameplay element.

there's really only Metal Gear Solid, where the vibration was used for that motion sensor.

i seriously doubt if developers will be any less lazy this generation too.

exactly why im not buying a console at launch this time - sony changes its mind all the friggin time to accomodate what other companies are doing.

They are the copy-cat gaming developers. They see what others are doing and make it cool.

Or in the case of this generation, balls it up and make outrangeous claims like rumble is last gen or the PS3 will last 10 years.

If Sony includes Rumble, does that make the controller No-Gen at all? I mean, you've got "Next Gen" Tilty Controls, but "Last Gen" rumble, wouldn't that mean they both cancel out?

Wouldn't that make the Sixaxis 'current gen'? icon_smile.gif
