GDC 2007: PS3 is "best piece of hardware, without question"

PS3 News | Yet time is needed to fulfil potential, reckons Dave Perry.
Dave Perry, former Shiny Entertainment boss and Earthworm Jim's daddy, has been singing the praises of Sony's PlayStation 3 hardware in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz.

"I think that Sony has made the best machine. It's the best piece of hardware, without question," he told the site. "It's absolutely insane hardware, and most people don't really understand that. I've been to the technical summit, I've sat there and listened to complete disclosure of what's in that machine. Being a programmer, it made me just sit there and go, 'Oh my God, this machine's incredible'," he added, perhaps while looking off into the middle distance and even dribbling a little bit.

Yet it's not all sweetness just yet, as Perry reckons it could be a while before the console's true power is really harnessed in spectacular ways. "I haven't seen a single game that shows me the power of PlayStation 3. I haven't seen anything even close to what the machine's capable of doing," he remarked. "So that's the sad part for Sony - I feel really bad for them that somebody hasn't really stepped up to show us the hardware all singing, all dancing.

"We're stuck in this time loop. It happens every single time - we know the games are going to be really bad at the start, and then God of War comes out at the end, and you go, 'The PlayStation 2 hardware can do God of War? It looks incredible! The point is you're not going to get to see the PlayStation 3 for probably a couple of years, and then you're going to go, 'Wow, that's incredible.'"

I don't think we're going to be waiting quite that long - Heavenly Sword looks to be shaping up as the title that's going to have people picking their jaws up from off the ground. That said, I have no doubt what-so-ever that Jaffe will do amazing things with the PS3, just like he said it's all a matter of time.

After two years or so of poor sales and flagging third-party support, Sony will announce the PS4, which will be cheap to make, small, quiet, fun to play, easy to develop for, and ultimately doomed by the ill-will the PS3 earned from gamers and developers.
Sony fans will weep and moan and wish for the days of the PS2, and curse the PS3, just as Sega fans curse the Saturn for killing Dreamcast, and Nintendo fans curse Gamecube for killing Wii (ok, give that one six months icon_wink.gif )

i'm happy that he's praising the ps3 and i'm more than certain that in a couple of years they would probably push out some games which can harness the protential of the power that it has but i just want mgs4 tekken and ffxiii >.>

btw off topic but did the trailor for the new tekken seem a bit weak oO?

Well, you would certainly hope that he knows what he's talking about. It does seem to have an edge over the 360, and games can only get better over time, that goes for any console. I'd really like to see what the PS3 is capable of.

Well, Sony is releasing a better engine for developers for FREE.
It will a while before any game release used this tool set.

This guy is stating the obvious, anyone with some technical background
know that the PS3 is more superior than any current console.
I remember post this note a year ago.

Looking at the current slagging of Sony going in the states, It doesnt look like the PS3 has an edge over 360 at all. Some are even saying that graphics of the same games look better on the 360. Microsoft are evil monopolists, dont count them out

Heavenly Sword is pretty but it sounds like this guy is predicting an even bigger leap in graphics than what GoW provided.

It's funny - I wasn't interested in a second console a few months back, but now I'm seriously considering a second console.

It's just a matter of whether to go Xbox360, which has heaps of cool games on it already that I'd like to play, and more coming, or the PS3, which looks quite impressive, albeit that its games don't interest me as much at this stage.

I am interested by this 'Home' thing for the PS3 though...

I have to say that God of War has really blown me away on PS2, I was kinda late to the game with PS2 but its amazing. I'm really impressed with the almost non-existent loads and the scale of some of the levels is just awesome.

Possibly - but for the surefire next big 'WOW' game on PS3 (the first?) my money is on Heavenly Sword. Go here and check out the "Development Video (March 6, 2007)" - Looks like it'll be a killer title. I thought it was going to be a pretty 'meh' game going off what was shown last E3... now I'm thinking it'll be a little more than that icon_wink.gif

^ Andy Serkis.

Dave Perry sure sounds like he's brown-nosing big time. Somewhere deep down, I know the PS3 is the more powerful machine but Sony's arrogant stance on the matter doesn't really compel me to acknowledge it. Now that they've been humbled somewhat through their relatively recent spate of negative media coverage and idiotic PR, that little bit of suppressed knowledge is slowly coming to the fore. It ain't at the surface yet, but it's coming.

I think most developers would say tit for tat, personally I think the graphical leap for either consoles will be too small to tell. It wont be like Gamecube vs XBox. Plus I'm hoping Microsoft brides me with stuff, so I couldnt care.

QFT!

You're right, they are getting better lately - but I'm still finding it a one-for-one ratio. Everytime I see/read something that makes me think "Well damn, that's really cool" something else will come along in short order to change that to a "Piss off you arrogant bastards and make a console that doesn't need a mortgage to pay off".
It's a very confusing time for me, basically icon_razz.gif

Which brings me to my point that this quote is full of it. I don't think you can honestly get a right answer to which is the best hardware/console, just your personal preference.

He said best piece of HARDWARE. Not best console. There is a huge difference.

I am talking hardware, they are about the same (360 and PS3). A beefier processor does not always amount to more grunt avaliable, and despite how powerful Cell is, it has its limitations

How can you say they are the same when developers for the past few months have been saying how difficult the PS3 is to work with and how similiar the 360 is to the PC.

They are so disimilar its not even funny.

Oh yes it does. Have you played Supreme Commander? Have you seen how destructive that game is on a single core processor as opposed to a dual core? Through that perspective, the 360's 3 cores are going to be doing a whole lot less than what Cell will be doing.
