GDC 2007: Harrison confirms PlayStation Home

PS3 News | The industry's worst-kept secret confirmed.
As we type, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Phil Harrison is on stage in Americaland delivering the inaugural speech of the 2007 Game Developers Conference. Last night however, Harrison sat down with selected members of the gaming press to confirm the existence of PlayStation Home, the avatar-based community hub of the PlayStation 3's online network.

PlayStation Home is designed to fit in with Sony's PlayStation 3 philosophy, one which is strongly focused on user-generated content. The likes of MySpace and YouTube, Harrison noted, have made significant impacts on the cultural landscape in recent years, and now it appears that Sony wants in on the action. Or, as Harrison put it, PS3 and PlayStation Home will be about, "leveraging the convergence of technologies, from broadband and video chat to supercomputer-speed processors, to make gaming more interactive and dynamic than ever before".

As we reported in our rumour piece of a few days ago, PlayStation Home users will be able to create an on-screen 3D avatar (with a far broader range of body types, skin types and other variables to be available). Not only that, but you'll be able to select a rather posh, sleek apartment for your mini-me character to hang around in, complete with a Hall of Fame room, where you can show off the trinkets and trophies you've accumulated from games. Much like Live Achievements, in other words.

"It's your place, so it's your rules," Harrison explained, as he showed off his own Hall of Fame, which had Killzone and Loco Roco characters in glass cabinets. You can even have friends over, and communicate with them via text, audio and video chat.

Beyond the front door of your apartment lies the World Map, for which Sony has some big plans. "We expect it will be not just about Sony content, not just about game content, but a much wider network," explained Harrison. "Over time we expect it to expand to non-game brands as well, so you could imagine going to visit a space that might be provided by a famous beverage company or a cool clothing company or a record company, or even a retailer, or a magazine or a website.

"So we think this is a very powerful way to bring community not just to games, but to other forms of lifestyle and entertainment - all built around PlayStation 3."

Harrison rounded off his discussion of PlayStation Home with the news that a public beta would kick off in April, and the final product will be released as a free download in the latter half of 2007.

Wow this very interesting stuff - If hadn;t already pre-ordered a PS3 I would o out right now and do it. Canvasing the response on the net, it seems Sony have hit back at the critics in a hard way. Even the usually biased Kotaku (g'day US fanboys) has heaps of glowing responses. See you at 'home'.

Sony are finally realising that the PS3 should be built on premium products, not just a premium price. Packing hardware in isn't good enough- they need to support their users with fantastic, innovative stuff like this.

Oh, and bring on LitteBigPlanet.

From the screenie it looks like it will be similar to "SecondLife" but will actually look good.

Will be looking out for this one...

Looks like an advertisment heavan to me. This could go either way, but I hope they at least bring achievements to the table for all games, in a standardised fashion ala 360.

I personally think this will be hugh imagine designing a house for yourself and showing of all your trophies from games. This is going to be so kool. They could do so much with this system it's going to be good in the future icon_cool.gif

Pretty much agree with everything here except for the 'innovative' part. They've just smooched a whole lot of their competitors' ideas into one platform. actually, 'just' is a bit of a misnomer, because it's incredibly well done, and it pretty awesome in almost every way. Good stuff, Sony.

I was with it up until "... infinitely more exciting than anything on other consoles." at which point I closed the window.
Yeah, it is a fantastic idea that'll draw people in... but calling a prettied up version of Second Life (with a few neat sharing features) the second coming of gaming Jesus is about 800 steps too far.

Looks very nice. I can't wait for it to be implemented, should make the PS3 a fair bit more interesting/will be a nice improvement over the current setup. The Trophy room sounds like fun, I'd like to be able to make use of that. icon_smile.gif

Hey Sony, there you are! Where you been man? We've missed you!

I now want a PS3, day one.

And Trophies > Achievements.

To say I'm hyped is an understatement. I'm just so glad Sony got their mojo back. F**k the haters, this sounds unreal.

Second Life coming to the PS3... wonder if it will be as successful... have to see what features it offers and how it works I suppose first.

Just one question... How many times will you go to a friends virtual house to look at their trophies? I still prefer the gamerscore.

Meanwhile, the whole thing looks like a great idea. Best exclusive game so far on PS3. This is a huge plus for the PS3, when the exclusive games start coming in it could be worth buying.

I'll probably buy one when the replace the gimpy controller, replace the PS2 BC and adjust the pricing so that I get to keep my 2nd kidney.

The same amount of times you can look at someone's gamerscore? Whats the difference?

I would prefer to go to a nice 3D space to see my friends achievements than read them from a bland list. I never got to play Sims Online and I think its a great idea icon_y1.gif

Don't forget, the opinions of the internet don't reflect everyone and aren't a sample of the population. With that said the response has been positive, it is good to see a turn around.

The new home service is definately a step in the right direction. Hopefully it won't be riddled with heaps of microtransactions for things that should be free. I am hoping that there is going to be lots of interactivity with the home world.

Balls in your court Nintendo and MS, wondering what sort of response there will be from this.
