Sony settles with Immersion

PS3 News | Vibration back on the cards?
Breaking news from GameDaily, which reports that Sony and Immersion have mended their ways, ending a long and bitter legal dispute over incorporation of vibration in Sony's Dual Shock controllers.

Sony Computer Entertainment President Kazou Hira had this to say: "We look forward to exploring with Immersion exciting new ways to bring the largest and best range of gameplay experiences to our customers. We are very excited about our new partnership with Immersion and the potential for new and innovative products incorporating their technologies."

So will the "last gen" feature find a home on Sony's SIXAXIS? No confimation from either company as yet, but a statement issued by Senior Director of Corporate Communications, Dave Karraker, sounds promising.

"We are very pleased to have reached a cooperative agreement with Immersion regarding the use of its advanced vibration technology (haptics technology). We look forward to working closely with them as we explore new and innovative ways to utilize this technology in PlayStation products."

And here I was thinking that settling law disputes was 'last gen'...

i have a feeling force-feedback will be next-gen now.

Yeah good news. Sony should fire some of those execs, they are really not helping the company buy making stupid annoucements like 'last-gen' crap all the time. Hopefully the rumble will be implemented sooner rather then later.

Not going to happen

^ Pointless post.

Yes, you're right Leon. Their PR is by far the worst. They constantly back themselves into corners, making stupid comments and claims.

Rumble is last-gen? Now a day later, they want to incorporate it again?!
No... no. They don't want to incorporate 'rumble', that's so old-tech. What they're bringing us is a whole new Next-Gen User Input Device Immersion Technology - Any and all similarites to older devices that 'rumble' are purely coincidental.

This is good news and all, but **** if they don't know how to jerk people around.

Rumble on any gamign controller is esseential and adds to every gaming experience. Somy need a vibrating controller for the PS3 and they know it.

Irony aside, I'm just really glad Sony finally came to their senses and settled. I couldn't image playing a console game without rumble. I wonder if this sudden change of face means they now have some kind of super secret rumble tech under their sleeve.

My apologies, I will elaborate.

Not going to happen because the PS3 is already out and people have invested buying SIXAXIS controllers, I dont see people forking out to replace them for onces with rumble. I could see it in other devices, but not the controller itself. From a PR point of view, adding it after (and after calling it last-gen etc) is worse than not adding it at all to the controller

Also I expect if they intend on releasing SIXAXIS with rumble, the price would go up further, as they would have to pay ongoing royalties to immersion

This makes that "rumble is last gen" comment even more amazing. Surely Sony knew that a deal was close to being done, yet they still said it.

This is definately good news. Rumble is awesome and should be included in all next generation sysems.

The executives are saying a few things which are being interpreted the wrong. I think it is thier attempt at trying to put a postive spin on bad news.

Sony really have the "We'll tell you what you want" attitude. Rumble or no rumble, their online service looks very average so I'll stick with the 360 for now. The PS3 had so much potential, I really hope they add a unified online service later on and can't understand for the life of me why it wasn't a launch feature. It comes down to the attitude that Sony can convince people what they want. You don't want a decent online service. You want Blu-Ray. You don't want rumble. You want a "Microsoft Sidewinder Freestyle" type PS1 controller.
I was going to pre-order a PS3, but some of the features I expected just aren't there. If they fix it up I will buy one, but at the moment there is no reason to buy a PS3. No great exclusives, and missing gamer features.

Yipee. Some good news, as well as BC being upscaled, DVD coming upscaled, the rumour of playstation home (virtual home) and the inclusion of achievements (also rumoured) are good news.

I think long term PS3 is onto a winner. Just wondering should I renew my $80 xbox live service when I could almost buy a PS3 game instead with the money???

Get SOCOM, because that's about the only game anybody plays on PSOnline. I think they will bring out a friends list, I just can't understand why they didn't do it from the start. That's the one feature they need to have.
I don't think the PS3 will be as successful as the PS2, it won't be a failure either. I had a PS2 and an Xbox so that I could play the best games on both machines. If the PS3 can get it's online up to scratch and get some must-have games that aren't already on 360, I'll buy one. AT THE MOMENT, the 360 is a better machine to own.

So you'll have to buy your PS3 controllers all over again! I'm glad everyone is happy that SONY is up to their old tricks.

That was what I was thinking. Sony knew they would settle with Immersion yet still chose to let Phil H say rumble was "last gen".

I think that just means that rumble in the SIXAXIS is still a long while away. Maybe it will turn out like the PS1 analog and digital controllers.

When I first read this, I laughed.

Yep, laughed.

Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased as hell to know that they have settled with Immersion and that it might mean that we get rumble again in the future, but I couldn't help but laugh at the irony of it all.
