Gabe Newell really doesn't like PS3

PS3 News | Sony "should just cancel it", reckons Valve head.
Valve Software boss Gabe Newell certainly isn't sitting on the fence when it comes to his views on the new consoles from Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft. Speaking in an interview with Game Informer, Newell laid into Sony big-time, even suggesting that the Japanese giant would be better off scrapping the PlayStation 3 and going back to the drawing-board. Blimey.

"The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think it's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted," spat Newell to the North American magazine, adding that, "I'd say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a do over. Just say, 'This was a horrible disaster and we're sorry and we're going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it'."

Newell was rather kinder about Nintendo, and admitted that he, "really likes everything that Nintendo is doing." Said Gabe: "The happy story is the Wii. I'm betting that by Christmas of next year, the Wii has a larger installed base than the 360. Other people think I'm crazy."

We'll leave that to our forumers to decide.

I like this guy, not that it says much, I'd like Hitler if he praised the Wii and condemned the PS3.

He may be right about the Wii, but who knows? Sony is never going to scrap the PS3 though. No way.

Yeah, it's not like HL2 Gabe... PS3s are already in lounge rooms and store shelves - Sony can't just pull it all back and redesign once people already have them and so many devs have commited countless hours and dollars into production. Use ya noggin!

Makes me wonder why Half Life 2 is in development for the PS3. Why invest in a 'total disaster'?

^ I reckon! Bahaha

I always thought he knew his stuff but not so much now. I suppose for someone coming from MS it's not surprising that he would **** all over the PS3.

By total disaster, he doesn't mean a financial flop but something that doesn't deliver what people wanted. He could be proven wrong on the latter if the PS3 is bought in droves, but in the case of the former it requires a different mindset than the other consoles to program and develop for it.

The PS3/Sony pile-on contines. Does anyone actually publically support them anymore?

I just cant wait till all the consoles are released, and all this constant bitching stops! Granted, sony brings much criticism upon itself, but to say they should just scrap the sytem shows this guy is a dick!

Well you tell us why HL3 will be awesome on the Wii. Is it simply because of the Wiimote being used as a pointing device??

Consoles can only now begin to handle what HL2 was 2 years ago on the PC. The Source engine and all its physics and lighting capabilities would be lost on Wii hardware.

HL3 on the most technecially capable platform with the most refined controls for a shooter.... now that would rule.

Resistance looks like a similar kinda game, even the theme lol its also rated top on Gamespot I cant wait for that

Stupid American FPS endorser, keep it to yourself. Especially considering your claims are unsubstantiated (or the press consider your substantiations unworthy of press).

It would be basically finicially, commerically nightmare for Sony do such a thing. Sure PS3 isnt selling as much predicted, its doing pretty good in Japan.

Actually i was saying that with quite a bit of sarcasm due to Valve saying the wii is looking promising. However i do believe the game and all FPS can take advantage of a pointing device.

I disagree basically with FPS on any console. FPS on a gamepad is retarded and with direct X 10, the argument of visuals for a console is basically out the window.

Gamepad, I can understand. I'm kinda lost with the direct x 10 statement.

well with dx10 on pc, the visuals will be way better than what 360 or ps3 can deliver. So other than profit 4 valve theres no reason 4 HL3 2 be on a console.

Not true, having DX10 card doesnt mean DX9C wont beat it in terms of visual or performance or power. Not forgetting since consoles run more directly to hardware there's a spike in performance and quality.

Also do not forget that Vista is a memory hog, especially with that stupid Aero glass interface.

DX10 and Vista's new API have been created to make sure Vista is a big leap forward for games so there's no point saying its inferior (unless of course you have an old GPU).

As for what this guy is saying, talk about jumping on the "young hip bandwagon" His comments about not listening to developers is the weakest argument, Sony have given developers difficult to master tools with massive power, he's saying they just want something simple to develop on so they can churn to the games, it's this attitude of lazy developers shipping half finished games that require multiple patches just to run the way they should have in the first place, that has most gamers angry in the first place.

If Sony can survive it they need to drop the price now, I know it will hurt but recouping a few hundred bucks is better than having $999 blocks of technology sitting in piles, we all know that the console is just the vehicle to drive sales of games, to be honest the only mistake they made was the price, I don't care how powerful it is, I got my 360 for $590 from Harvey Norman and I'll happily pay $690 for a PS3 but at $900+ I'd rather buy 9 x 360 games or a PS2 and all the best back catalogue I never got to play.

And as an early adopted of Sony technology ( 3rd in line for PS2, 7th in line for PSP) I am sick of paying the big bucks only to see it drop to less than 1/4 of it's launch price in a few years.
