Tekken 6 could go multiplatform

PS3 Rumour | PS3 exclusivity Tekken from Sony?
Current internet gossip is suggesting that the PlayStation 3 may not be the only platform to play host to Tekken 6 - if you believe the rumour-mongers (in this case, supposedly an "IGN insider source"), an Xbox 360 version of Namco's forthcoming scrapper could be in the pipeline.

Though the Tekken series has made cursory appearances before on non-Sony hardware (the Game Boy Advance got a game, and if you were dead naughty and had a Dreamcast with a copy of bleemcast!, you could play Tekken 3), the series is widely associated with Sony's consoles.

If the speculation is correct and Heihachi and co. do indeed find their way on to Microsoft's console, the news would be a blow for the PS3, which has already been forced to share previous exclusives with the Xbox 360, such as Assassin's Creed and Virtua Fighter 5. Whatever it eventually appears on, the game is currently marked down for a Q4 2007 release.

More as Namco confirms or denies this.

exclusivity 'tekken' from sony icon_lol.gif good one.

anyway considering the sony hating machine, which is the internet, i wouldn't be surprised if this rumour is made up.

then again......

There certainly are a lot of rumour of lost exclusivity lately... although I reckon it's fairly pointless getting your hopes up until there's some kind of confirmation one way or the other. As Crestfallen said, there are a hell of a lot of Sony haters being vocal these days.

Its true there are a lot of haters, but its also true sony are partly to blame for producing it. Point is Namco are fed up of sony's lies, they failed with install base and are slipping, its cool they're ambitious but if they want to blu-ray and ps3 successful then they gotta shape up. They risked big, and they bigger the height the higher the fall.

If this is true, it shows that the developers don't have faith in PS3.
Not a bad thing for us gamers, as we don't need to fork out money for all the consoles. Fighting games don't really push the hardware enough anyway.

A while back Tekken 5 was said to be coming to gamecube and maybe Xbox as well. I'm not sure if that was confirmed or rumoured.

It'd say the fact that Namco seem to be continually discussing the potential for a multi-platform Tekken leads credence to the hope that it may happen.

Chris has set the bar quite high for blurbs this year already! I feel a good year for half-puns coming on.

Surely Sony will just throw cash at Namco to keep this gem on the Sony black box.

not a matter of faith, its a matter of selling the most units to coincide with increasing production costs.

I think I've said this before but I think someone inside the Sony boardroom are cutting their strings (funding) slowly but surely. It'd be good because from my short experiance with it Tekkan with a pretty good game.

In terms of developers though, maybe Namco want to cash in on the Xbox 360's more establisted fan-base.

Sometimes I wonder if they spend more time on the subtitles than they do the articles. Doesn't make much of a difference to me, I love the puns.

Depends, xbox side games like this will sell well regardless based on commerical appeal, and ps3 side it wont sell well even if most people buy it, cause of not enough console. If sony throw money at it, it wouldnt mean much, cause I assume they could make more money on both consoles rather than one.

Well thats the idea of throwing money at it. Sony pay up to namco based on the sales that they might lose due to it not being on 360. So either namco 'theoretically' breaks even or makes a profit while Sony keep their jewels in their crown.

This is one title i hope doesnt go multiplatform and if there is substance to this rumour i hope sony fight for it. Although with Tekken Dark Ressurection going online for the PS3 and released on the PSP last year with no rumours about that game heading to any non-sony system then theres little reason to believe these rumours. The 360 fanbase so far isnt big enough to have developers put all their eggs in one basket. But that may also be the reason why there have been alot of exclusive titles going multi-platform.

Was it a previous article that said to get back development costs for a next gen game you have to sell minimum 500,000 copies of a game. Are there even that many PS3s out there?

Me I never liked Tekken but I'll still be happy to see it on 360. I do really want to see Soul Calibur on 360 though, the last version being limited to the worse platform was very disapointing after how great SC2 was on GC and XB.

8 Million consoles and growing compared to a little over a million for Playstation. I think that for XBox, they already have the bigger, more established fan-base.

Rob_Jedi: The article was namco had to sell 500,000 copies of both their launch games to break even, being Ridge Racer 7 and Gundam Crossfire. Latest predictions are approx 1.3million PS3's sold, although not official, it would suggest theres more than half a million PS3's out there.

NeoSanity: 8million compared with 1million. Thats currently and the PS3 is only available in 2 regions of the world. Europe is a larger consumer base for the PlayStation in comparison with Japan so the PS3 still has a way to go. Also remember that its not going to remain at 8mill/1mill for long. Tekken6 is due for end of 07, not right now so the current difference in sales doesnt tell too much of a story thus far. Seeing as the PS3 has been on the market for nearly 2 months as oppossed to the Xbox which is over a year now.

And while one side of the fence you could look at the 'overpriced system, losing exclusives, and negative press for the past 6 months' on the other side you have microsoft saying they'll have 10million 360's sold before the opposition launches. They havnt managed that in a year, with no competition on the shelves, how does that look for developers? I'm not trying to start a war between consoles, i'm just backing up my point before that its too early for devs to put all their eggs in one basket. Is that not a fair call? One thing for sure is this will be one interesting console war.
