Analysts: PS3 will win console race

PS3 News | But won't dominate.
Welcome to the first of, ooh, probably thousands of analyst stories in 2007. Yup, even though all three consoles are out on shop shelves, analysts are still gazing studiously into their crystal balls, with the latest report predicting that - despite a launch plagued by console shortages - Sony's PlayStation 3 will still clinch top spot in the console race.

The drily-named Research and Markets is the fortune-teller in this case, with the firm estimating the PlayStation 3 will have sold around 75 million units by 2010. No numbers regarding the installed base of Nintendo's Wii or Microsoft's Xbox 360 are offered by the study, but the report does hint that Sony's vice-like grip on the home console market may weaken during this generation: "The console is not expected to dominate as much as its predecessor, the PS2, due to late launch issues in the PAL region and the early lead of Microsoft's Xbox 360," it states.

So now you know.

Know why they're called ANALists?

Because of where they pull these predictions from.

i think we need a special digest report of analyst reports.

then send it to some analyst firm for analysis.

I wonder where this analyst is getting his info form if you catch my drift. I've seen a few puff peices on how gosh darn wonderful Bluray is on ACA and Cybershack is so I'm sure Sony are trying their best to make people think their if they don't buy thier console they're missing out.

Once the PS3 price comes down significantly, the PS2's insane install base will do the rest of the work. Never underestimate the power of Singstar, and the PS2 didn't win this generation at $750. It happenned at $199.

All these analysts should go into a bum fight. That would actually be interesting. Or get a job.

It'll be five years until the PS3 hits US$199, and by then the generation will be well decided.

If the PS3 is going to win, casuals will have to be convinced to spend more on hardware, simple as that. If USA Madden boy won't spend US$350-400 on the system, the PS3 can't win.

how much US$ was the PS2 at launch?

I was talking in terms of AUD, but I agree with David that the PS2's success at $199 was built on the fact that people were willing to buy it at $500+. I just feel that the PS3 will have to drop about $200 really quickly so they can try the same thing. Otherwise, it's just way to high to allow for that smooth purchase progression from hardcore to casual.

Not going to happen, unless Sony want to risk destroying the company. All of what Sony has that appeals to the "mainstream" is going to other companies. Sure they have Singstar and Buzz but the people who really like these games will/have been attracted to games like Wii Sports. Guitar Hero is coming out on the 360 as well.

Also with Singstar, it's mostly an online title (or so it's been implied so far), only 1/3 of Americans have broadband and I don't really think most of them would fit into the demographic of Singstarians. It might not be as popular this time around I think.

I can't honestly see any way (that Sony can do by themselves) the PS3 will have the same success as the PS2 (I am a little bias though).

If they drop the price on the PS3 too quickly, people go do a "Gamecube" on it, so it won't sell. Or people will buy them, and Sony won't recup the money they lose making it and they'll have to close anyway.

To save them from going under, they could drop the price of Blu-Ray players so Blu-Ray will will the format war and Sony can get the massive licensing fees from that. But this will kill the PS3 as a "cheap" Blu-Ray player.

Of course if Square Enix got on board and released a 1080p remake of FFVII most of Sony's troubles would be over icon_razz.gif

The PS2 launched at US$299, and over 80% of systems were sold at US$199 or under.

Heh.

Firstly I doubt Blu-Ray will actually pull the numbers needed to see profits, mainly because Universal (being the largest studio network in the world) won't support it, Microsoft which dominates the computing industry won't support it and Tosiba have already put into production it's HD-DVD players which start at $500. Now the price difference and the larger selection in movies will win me over alone.

Blu-Ray at this stage is just a luxury toy for those willing to throw the $1500 around for just the DVD player, not to mention that less than 5% of Americans have the TV that will play the higher resolution video.

Sony in personal opinion just don't seem to appeal to me with their Playstation 3, I draw this conclusion on the fact that I thouught about what are they bringing me that's extra compared to the Playstation 3. The overall power is pretty much the same from what I've read, most of the games I'm looking forward to are on the Xbxo 360 also with the same graphics and really to warrent the $1000, I'd have to be sure that Blu-ray will win the DVD war.

I mean if Blu-Ray does pull through then the $1000 Playstation 3 looks a lot more attractive to buy but in any case I don't really watch DVDs on my consoles, which makes the whole Blu-Ray redundant.

I think that these Analysts are just mist and haze and really are just going by trends in the past. Mind you these trends seem to change quite often.

If the PS3 sells 75 million consoles by 2010, I'll do something really crazy that I can't think of at this minute.

Seriously, it's just not going to happen. Sony made such a massive mistake with it's pricing structure that it's really quite unbelievable. IF they had cut the Blu-Ray player and sold only the $500US SKU for $300US, they'd be laughing all the way to the bank. The thing would have sold like crazy. Instead they decided to give a big F U to the consumer and try and force their next-gen disc format into the market. They're going to pay the price by, I think, coming 3rd in the console market.

It does, I'm not gonna argue that ps3 isnt value for money, but how you apply value for money, depends on yourself. If you dont want blu-ray dvd player, and want just a gaming machine ps3 isnt the right thing.

Blu-ray isnt DVD at the end of day.

I was reading this article before (Today) from IGN & after I read about it, it reminded me of how the GameCube started off.

360 Leads Holiday Sales
But Nintendo was right on Microsoft's heels.
by Daemon Hatfield

US, January 2, 2007 - According to preliminary NPD data, the Xbox 360 was the best-selling console during the holiday season in the U.S. CNBC is reporting that Americans picked up two million units of Microsoft's system during the period.

But Nintendo was not far behind. In spite of limited availability, the Wii sold 1.8 million units from its launch until December 25. Sony only moved approximately 750,000 units of the PlayStation 3, due to manufacturing problems and decreased demand. Over the holidays, IGN repeatedly found PS3s available at retailers while no Wiis were in sight. The price of a PS3 on eBay has also dropped to around its MSRP, while the Wii is still selling for over twice its retail price.

NPD expects to release complete sales data for the holiday season later this month.

Personally, the only form guide we can go on, is early results from oversea's territories, & this is probably a good indication of what the general trend will be.
