PlayStation 3 firmware update released

PS3 News | Hard disk titles now playable.
Since the PlayStation 3 launched in America and Japan last month Sony have been providing updates every few weeks. The latest update, 1.31, has just been released and can be downloaded via the PlayStation 3 or at the Sony network update website.

So what does the update contain? The PlayStation 3's compatibility with older PlayStation 2 games has been improved. For example, you can now play PlayStation 2 titles which require a hard disk. You'll also be able to select HDMI as a dual output format in the settings.

It's not a major update but it seems like Sony will keep pushing these updates out quite frequently to address some of the issues with the new console. As long as they're free and timely we're certainly not complaining.

It's good to see that they're committed to getting the patches out there. Let's hope that the support continues after the whole launch period is up. Although judging by their timely updates for the PSP, that shouldn't be a problem.
