Online PS3 games to use single ID

PS3 News | Resistance producer explains all.
There's been a fair old amount of confusion recently over precisely how PlayStation 3 games will work online, in respect to online IDs, buddy lists and whatnot. Initially, it was assumed that the PS3's online service would operate in a similar fashion to Microsoft's Xbox Live service, with players using one online ID for all games, and also a single friends list and messaging system.

That seemed logical enough until last week, when Insomniac Games announced that its PS3 launch title, Resistance: Fall of Man, would use a separate friends list that was unique to players of Resistance, as opposed to the centralised buddy list offered by the PS3. This in turn led to all sorts of head-scratching and prompted numerous questions. Questions such as: would this mean that every PS3 title will require a different online ID to play? Will every PS3 game have its own buddy list? Why has Insomniac not just used the centralised buddy list on the PS3 service? And so forth.

Thankfully, the answers have come thick and fast, thanks to Dan Brooke, UK producer on Resistance. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Brooke revealed that yes, every PS3 title will use the same universal sign-in and the same online ID, no matter what you're playing. "I wish to be clear that Resistance uses the PlayStation online ID to sign into the game," he explained. "There's no separate login for Resistance and the online ID you create will be the same you use for all titles." Phew.

The reason Insomniac has decided to use an exclusive-to-Resistance list is also straightforward enough; apparently, the PlayStation 3 operating system does not offer centralised support for the many online features sported by the game, such as clan support, match-making, party support and leaderboards. Hence, titles that do use the PS3's centralised service won't be able to enjoy such features. Which is why Sony is giving developers the option of going alone, so to speak.

Anyway, hope that helped. We're a little less confused now.

Sounds better, but still falls short of way Live is offering.

Why is it so confusing at all?

Jeez, you'd think a week from launch they'd have it sorted by now.
