PS3 launch line-up confirmed

PS3 News | Also, what's in the box and how much you pay for extras.
With the PlayStation 3 a little more than a month away from it's (rather limited) release, SCEA held a Gamer's day to reveal all that was previously unknown about Sony's next-gen console. Two of the more important pieces of information that were revealed included the confirmed launch line-up and the contents of the box that Americans will be paying up to $US600 for. The launch line-up is as follows:
  • Genji Days of the Blade
  • NBA 07
  • Resistance Fall of Man
  • Blazing Angels Squadrons of WWII
  • Call of Duty 3
  • EA Sports Fight Night Round 3
  • The Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion
  • F.E.A.R.
  • Full Auto 2 Battlelines
  • Madden NFL 07
  • Marvel Ultimate Alliance
  • Mobile Suit Gundam Crossfire
  • NBA 2K7
  • NHL 2K7
  • Untold Legends Dark Kingdom
  • Ridge Racer 7
  • Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07
  • Sonic the Hedgehog
  • Need for Speed Carbon
  • Tony Hawk's Project 8
  • Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas
While the list could hardly be considered shabby, there is something of a lack of a killer-app. Top-rated games such as Oblivion and F.E.A.R. are nothing new, there are a few ports, and titles such as Untold Legends and Genji haven't made much impression so far. If anything, the mantles falls onto Resistance: Fall of Man.

The contents of both the 20GB and 60GB are essentially identical:
  • One Sixaxis controller
  • AC cord
  • USB mini-cable
  • Ethernet cable
  • Multi-AV cable with composite connectors
According to Sony, the controller will be ready to go out of the box an it has a 20 meter wireless range and 30 hours of battery life on one charge. The PS3 does not have a sizeable "brick" attached to it and the Multi-AV cable is likely to be similar to that which came with our 360s. According to IGN, the box is a rather sizeable one and even has a handle.

As far as pricing goes, there isn't much that is unexpected:
  • First party software - $US59.99.
  • Sixaxis controller - $US49.99
  • Memory card adapter - $US14.99
  • A Blu-ray player remote - $US24.99 (available in December)
Obviously, the first-party software price will translate into $AU120 by the time the games reach our shores. We wait and see whether the 3rd parties will replicate this or possibly go higher. Interestingly, a Wii-mote on its own costs less than the PS3 controller (at $US39.99).

Finally, Sony has stated that the first 500 000 PS3 units will all come with a Blu-ray copy of the movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Whether or not this is the best way to showcase Blu-ray, we'll leave to you to decide. It's good to see that Sony has finally gone on the offensive, with this the strongest indication yet that the company is actually ready for November 17th. Even though we'll be waiting a while before we see it in action, this is turning out to be a very interesting holiday season. More as it happens, here on PALGN.

I'm still kind of stumped as to why they're not adding in any HDMI cables. I mean, they've been promoting the hell out of the Ps3's ability to utilize true HD in 1080p, but they don't even supply HDMI to get full quality? It's just stupid IMO.

That being said, the more I look at the launch list the more I'm content with it. It's got enough to supply for a bit, and IMO Resistance is going to be lovely.

Where's Motorstorm?

Was announced that it was pushed back ages ago. Of what I recall they said it'll be released soon after launch, as well as Heavenly Sword. Those 2 games looks potentially great. Too bad they didn't make launch.

Basically the cables are very expensive, so it would drive up the cost even more (and it gives an opportunity to make another sale for those who want it)

well on a positive note, we (PAL) didn't make the launch either, so maybe it will be a launch/close to launch title

HDMI is over-rated. Most people who'll get a 1080p TV will have a decent sound system to go with it. Use DVI instead, it's a whole lot cheaper (plus you can use it as a Computer monitor as well).

Wait, the PS3 is > 360 because it does 1080p... but they give you composite cables in the box so you can view that amazing quality in beautiful standard definition? icon_eek.gif

Really nice line-up. Here's hoping Untold Legends and Resistance prove to be really strong titles, and give Sony the first-party killer app Microsoft lacked. Lots of ports (like the 360 launch), but heaps of big franchises.

It'll look good on the shelves, at the very least.

To be honest, the only game I would buy would be Sonic.

Oh crap.

$100 Sixaxis controllers confirmed?

A little critisism here, the point that you make about no killer title might be valid
yet the 360 will be out 12 months in the US
and still lacks a said killer title, infact the PS3
will have the pick of the games, oblivion and Fear,

Please read the WHOLE article or think about what your saying before you make such stupid comments.
