Linux coming to the PlayStation 3

PS3 News | Yellow Dog in the house.
Terra Soft has confirmed that v5.0 of its Yellow Dog Linux will be released for the PlayStation 3 in November. The program will not be free initially. However, if you're a paid YDL.net user or are willing to part some cash for a PlayStation 3 install disk then you'll be able to use the program early, but those of us who want if for nix will need to wait just a little bit longer.

Yellow Dog will include a single click install, for those (like myself) who aren't entirely familiar with Linux. If you are familiar with Linux then it will include some additional install options. The operating system is based on Fedora Core 5 and comes with an integrated E17 desktop, Firefox 1.5.0, OpenOffice and more (which i'm sure is very important to those people who are familiar with Linux).

For the PlayStation 3 to get Linux support so early in its lifespan is a big advantage. It took quite a few years for Linux to come to the PlayStation 2.

There was Linux on PS1 and PS2 as well, wasnt there? I was really interested in seeing how these builds worked (being a lunix noob for meany years now) but got sidetracked by the seemingly far superior X-Box linux project.

Linux for PS2 was essentially a dead goose in australia from the get go. It used the HDD which was never released here. Linux on PS3 on the other hand should come bundled!

THen again Sony would probably not like that, as you know 6 months after is was out the Linux community would have the PS3 running better than SONY. XD

I wonder if these people know that charging people for Linux is against the "rules" of Open Source icon_rolleyes.gif

However I'm under the impression that Linux on PS3 = Publicity Stunt.

They would be charging for the installer not linux itself (I think thats how it works anyway)

I still don't understand why anyone would want to turn their console into a PC anyway but thats just me.

Actually Yellow Dog is free, you need a mac to run it, not an intel one.

Never mind I mis-read the quote.
