Assassin’s Creed is set in 1191 just after Richard the Lionheart recaptures the port city of Acre from occupying Saracens. With a base of operations established, the Crusaders prepare to march south towards Jerusalem where they intend to recapture the city in the name of the Church. However, the leader of the Saracen Army named Saladin currently rules the city. After being defeated by Richard at Acre, Saladin is not prepared to be humiliated again. The Saracens are amassing at the ruins of Fortress Arsuf, intending to ambush the Crusaders and prevent them from reaching Jerusalem.
While Richard and Saladin battle one another, the Holy Land has been left wide open. The men left to govern in their stead have begun taking advantage of their newfound positions of power. They are free to exploit whoever they please. Leader of the Assassins, Sinan, offers Altair an opportunity to redeem himself by traveling to the Holy Land. Sinan names nine of the key men exploiting the suffering created by the Third Crusade. By assassinating these men, Altair will help bring stability to the region and regain his place in the Assassins Order.
