Final Fantasy XI sequel NOT on the way

PS3 News | Updated - Square Enix deny all knowledge.
In a Monday report, Nikkei.net said that Square Enix is working on a sequel to the popular MMORPG, Final Fantasy XI. The poor sales of the recent FFXI release for the Xbox 360, despite ambitious marketing efforts, demonstrate the age of the original title and it seems clear that Square Enix needs to develop a new engine for the new generation. The sequel to FFXI looks like it will be available for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, using the upcoming Windows Vista operating system.

No specifics on the game itself have been announced regarding how, if at all, the game will tie in with the original's world and storyline. At this stage Square Enix could take the game in any direction, including away from the Final Fantasy license entirely. We'll keep you informed about any new developments.

Update: Eurogamer are reporting that, in a statement released earlier today, Square Enix has confirmed that it is NOT working on a sequel to Final Fantasy XI at present.

"The Company did not make such an announcement and has not made any decisions resembling those detailed in the [Nikkei] media report," stated Square Enix. The statement went on to note that Square Enix are always working on "expansion packs for Final Fantasy XI, available on PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and Windows, as well as performing version updates."

So, that kills that rumour, then.

Well this really only makes sense. They've spent ages getting FFXI off the ground and getting a MMO model in place. They might as well create a new game for it.

This should be interesting, XI never really interested me, so maybe this will be more appealing. I'll look out for any new info.

Well, interesting developments, for those who didn't notice the change - Brendan picked up that Square denied the rumours and no such sequel is on the way. Big rumour squashing right here.

I for one am glad. There was mention of a next-gen MMO by Square, but I am not really interested in a sequel to XI. That way I don't have to look at another -2 numbering system again, lame. Plus, I didn't particularly like FFXI anyway, so changing direction could be a good move.

Don't SE have another MMO on their hands already? Fantasy Earth or something? I do know it's to be played through PlayOnline, like that FFVII thingo, Tetra Master and of course FFXI.

I think SE mapped out an 18 month gameplan for FFXI at their last convention in the US and they've dropped large hints they have another expanion in the works for when ToAU is wrapped up. It's pretty safe to say there is no sequel on the way.
