Sony on PS3 and E-distribution

PS3 News | New developers set to benefit, promises executive.
The man in charge of Sony's digital distribution strategy for the PlayStation 3 has declared that new developers will be given the opportunity to "try out new ideas in a low risk, quick feedback environment," thanks to the PS3 E-Distribution Initiative, a digital download service that will allow every PS3 owner access to games developed by first- and third-party teams. It's a model that bears similarities to Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade service.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Director of External Production at SCEA Santa Monica John Hight said, "Certainly being able to sell globally on-line makes it easier to reach international and remote markets. On the business side, it also lowers our cost of sales and eliminates inventory risk. It should help curtail used game sales and piracy. And this new form of distribution will lower the barriers of entry for new developers," added Hight, before noting that, "We can try out new ideas in a low risk, quick feedback environment. We're looking for fresh, new ideas that fully exploit the power of PlayStation 3."

However, third party developers wishing to make use of the E-Distribution Initiative won't necessarily receive financial support from Sony itself, with Hight noting that Sony will, "fund development for first-party games and we are open to self-funded games."

It should help curtail used game sales and piracy.

The fact that they want to 'curtail' used game sales in the same way as piracy disturbs me deeply...
