The success of SingStar has meant that we've seen no less than five music disks released within two years of one another, with another three titles due for release this year. And suffice to say it surprised noone when Sony announced at E3 that SingStar would be coming to the PlayStation 3 in the form of My SingStar. Rather than see a new disk released every six months, you'll be able to download the songs directly off of the internet and store them onto the PlayStation 3's hard drive. In the spirit of microtransactions, it'll also be possible to download skins and artist images if you just can't get enough.
It's currently unknown whether the game will actually ship with any songs built in, or whether you'll need to import your current collection over. But what we do know is that by the time My SingStar is released there will be over three hundred SingStar compatible songs, and we may finally get an opportunity to download the territory exclusive songs that have been released on certain compilations. Songs should appear for download from day one, but currently we're unsure how much it will cost to download each music video. It would be good if the PlayStation 3 version came with a code to unlock thirty songs or so of your choice.
If you're enticed by the idea of going online then downloadable songs aren't the only reason to connect to the internet with your PlayStation 3. The game will be fully compatible with the Eyetoy and will let each player record and upload videos of their performances to the internet. We're not sure how much effort has been put into the online mode but this means we could soon be seeing a SingStar Idol. Many possibilities are opened up with online support. It'll also be possible to save your own replays to the hard-drive and transfer them over to the PSP if you want to show your friends on the train.
The microphones have also been improved and will be a lot more durable. In the past few years we've had to replace our microphones three times, so this should mean the microphones can withstand a bit more abuse. The technology in the microphones should also be improved as well; currently the voice recognition software isn't as good as it could be, and this is a chance for Sony to improve the quality of the all-important hardware.
It may not seem like My SingStar is going to be a huge title for the PlayStation 3, but it could be one of the most appealing pieces of software on the console yet. Diehard fans of Sony are going to purchase the console no matter what software is on it, but SingStar has such mass mainstream appeal that a new game in the series could be the reason many people upgrade to the new console.
