Final Fantasy XIII to look dead good

PS3 News | Graphics similar to Advent Children, says director.
Square-Enix certainly likes its eye candy, a fact further underlined by the latest quotes from Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama. Speaking to Dengeki Online, Toriyama announced that he wanted the fight scenes in the forthcoming RPG, which will appear on the PlayStation 3, to visually match the ones in Final Fantasy VII Advent Children, the computer-generated film released last year.

"FFXIII attempts to see how far it's possible to make FFVII Advent Children's battles into a game," said Toriyama. "FFVII Advent Children is a video production, and it showed us battles that have not been achievable in FF so far. With FFXIII, we're focusing on how far we can realise the video." Final Fantasy XIII was shown off at Sony's E3 conference last month, and Toriyama also confirmed to Dengeki that Square-Enix would have a playable demo of the title ready for E3 next year.

More as we get it.

I really think this is a pile of bullocks.

Who knows, but I'll save any sort of comment on the matter until I see it.

(and yes, I realise (are we z or s? I always forget) the above is a comment so no need pointing it out)

Killzone 2 anyone?

leonmc im sorry to say that your showing you fanboy side there as
although the two titles are on the same hardware they are different
companies, please get off the internet with all this stupid posting.

Whatever Emuaust, I'll counter my stupid posting, agaisnt your stupidier posting with another stupid posting. I plan to buy a PS3 and FFXIII is in my top 5 games in the next generation (as is MGS4). It was the same a few years (well many now) ago with the N64 saying the graphics generated by the console will be Terminator 2 quality. Or on the 360/PS3 with EAs render of what they expect Madden to look like on next gen.

I'm simply stating that claims of "real time" graphics to pip CG is simply to generate hype for games and that what annoys me. Honestly, if it looks anywhere near FFVII:AC then I'll gladly eat my words and rejoice with the beauty of technology.

God I hate the word fanboy and people accusing each other of being one.

I've seen some video of Final Fantasy XIII and quite honestly i've never seen a game where the in-game graphics are so close to the FMV quality (the fmv was on par with if not better than Advent Children).

I don't even like Final Fantasy but quite honestly what the developer is saying is pretty much true from what i've seen (imo).

Yeah, that video is nice, but I can't see how that could be "gameplay". I'd say it was a targeted tech demo.

But I must say the setting, art and style do look great, I'm glad to see a FF game with a bit of "zest" as opposed to being traditional sword/old world. But we have FFXII to look forward to in the mean time!!! icon_smile.gif

You're contradicting yourself in part right there in that FFXII is "traditional sword/old world" yet you're eagerly awaiting it. Not the most eloquent way of making a point - if you in fact made one.

I do agree with leonmc. We don't know for sure if what we saw was real time graphics. After being burnt last year from their Tekken6, Killzone2. I think we can all agree that $ony can't be trusted.
Not that I doubt the graphics won't be on par with AC (it's US$599 after all...), but we have to see it to believe it.

Tough crowd, thanks for pointing out my pointless statement and the way I did it....

Anyhoo, I'm saying it is nice to see them take the series in a more modern/different setting judging from the FFXIII trailer. Which doesn't imply I hated the other games, far from it. That and almost all the modern FF games have had leads with tragic past/problems (Cloud, Squall, Zidane, Titus etc), but this one looks to have a cheeky/arrogant lead which is refershing.

leonmc, if you're not a fanboy then dont write like one. You words are doubtful. I dont think you are a fanboy though.

As for graphics, I dont believe any real-time video or in-game video can ever realised/exceed pre-rendered FMV. I did some rendering in Matlab and it took days for a sequence. It just too much computational to achieve in real time.

As for next generation consoles, i believes the PS3 will have the best real time FMV and Toriyama's plans is achievable once they efficiently utilised the Cell SPEs and RSX (if the spec they released is true).
Also pipelining and concurrent execution with 6 SPEs, making the PS3 desirable for programmers/artist.
(This is based on a few games companies in Australia and in 2-5 years time consumers can play Australian-made games for PS3,
this will be cool).

PS3 will have graphics that is not achievable in XBOX360 and even current top end PCs.

Thus, I will buy the PS3 for graphics/games/videos and Wii for gameplay/fun. Xbox 360 is just a slot machine - entertaining but wasteful.

How so? The graphics on the PS3 don't appear to be that much better than the 360's. I don't think most people would spend the extra $350 on a PS3 just for graphics, games definatly, but there really is not a giant difference in visual appeal. Both are stunning.

LOL - who is accusing who of fanboyism?

Qbert, I am agree that the demos at E3 shows the PS3 and 360 are similar and yet some the 360 are better.
Also, I cant prove to you....but i am a tehnical/programmer guy and
i can confident saying that looking at the SPECS on both systems,
the PS3 will be superior.
If you ever program for games, you'll know that the Cells SPEs and RSX is something amazing. Endless possibilities - multitasking, AI, real time physics.
Games companies in Australia don't invest millions on the PS3 for no reason.

LOL - I may prefer a PS3 over Xbox360, but fair...

Im not a fanboy (and i dont think Leon is either) but i don't think we'll be seeing real time advent children graphics any time soon.

Again with the 'i'm a programmer/systems analyst/robotics engineer/leader of the u.n.' talk.

I'm sure a prerequisite for all those careers is at least a passing grade in secondary school english and grammar, which judging from your posts, you don't have.

Don't talk to us about cell chips and physics when the thing is out.In the meantime, let's talk about screeny's and videos of games and thenjudge them.Seeing is believing.

Often, talking in forum or chatting, i just type.

Jibbs, dont be tooo judgemental, i dont need to justify
myself to you or who i am to you. I am here to give my opinions as a gamer
not my title.

Well...talking video games consoles...i prefer PS3 and pay
$350 extra for BD and Full Compatibility. These two points are
good enough to get the PS3 over 360.

I have friends in the industry developing games on the PS3. They say the PS3 is a very powerful platform, but has many problems similar to the PS2 (in terms of a steep development curve and lack of software tools). Which just means it will take a while for games to take full potential of the hardware.

Nobody is bagging the PS3, it will be a great piece of technology. As is the 360 and Wii. Making outrangeous claims that the PS3 will be better then the 360 is groundless and above all pointless because they will have 'must have' titles for either platform.

Just because their goal is to get as close to Advent Children in realtime as they can, doesn't mean that the graphics are going to end up comparable. Maybe it's just me, but he sounds more like he is trying to say that there will be a bit more variety and realism in the battles - which could imply things other than having insane graphics.

True, that is a very important component. It looks like they've done a good job of it from the trailer, the gameplay looks nice, and I'm sure there's a good story in it. I like the look of the in-game battle menu. My first comment was just relating to the fact that I think they are trying very hard, setting a goal like that is not easy. Aside from that the game is looking to show the 360 how to present a highly detailed game, for sure. Anyway, it's a FF game, so I want it! icon_razz.gif I'm still waiting to get my hands on FFXII!

I saw the trailer as well and the action battle scene doesn't look like gameplay to me either. Regardless, Square-Enix will still come up with a pretty good looking FFXIII.
