Key PS3 launch titles put back to 2007

PS3 News | Singstar could be there for launch, however.
Speaking to CVG, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe CEO David Reeves has revealed that a trio of key PlayStation 3 launch titles are set to miss the November 17 launch date, and will now emerge in 2007. Formula One and Motorstorm are amongst those affected, whilst Heavenly Sword, one of the few bright spots of Sony's performance at E3, will also miss launch day.

The delay of all three is something of a blow to Sony, which hasn't enjoyed the best of times recently, with the PS3 price and a rather underwhelming E3 showing both earning the company criticism. Nevertheless, Reeves has promised that the launch will see Sony "not just going for hardcore gamers," and announced that the launch window for PS3 will have a focus on social gaming, with My Singstar (which did look mighty nice at E3) scheduled to hit stores either on launch day or "certainly before Christmas." An EyeToy game was also promised by Reeves, and will appear after Christmas, but before March 2007.

So, which titles are going to be there at launch exactly? Well, a couple of days ago Kaz Hirai informed us that there'll be 15 games launching alongside the console. Insomniac's Resistance: Fall of Man will certainly be a launch title, according to Reeves, though aside from that things are still rather murky. However, old Reevesey remains confident in the powerful PlayStation brand, confidently declaring that, "We've built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even if it didn't have games," which is an interesting concept if you ask us.

More PS3 launch shenanigans as we get them, anyway.

Theres no denying that sing star has sold quite a few PS2s (or at least swayed a lot of parents into buying a PS2) But a thousand dollar karaoke machine? you would have to get quite a few singing lessons thrown in for that price. Funny, I was just reading in another thread (15 launch titles for PS3) that Heavenly sword and Motorstorm would make the PS3 worth getting on launch. It seems that no news would be good news for Sony as of late.

"We have hyped up this console to the max. We let you down in E3 with poor presentations and a downgraded console design. There will probably be 15 games, but you know, we're making you wait 6 months for the decent games. But our previous consoles have been good so we rely on you to please buy the console on launch...pretty please?"

If your going to annouce an insane price, you need killer apps to back it up. I swear to god a Monkey is running that company atm.

Indeed it does - Sony has had a bit of a nightmare fortnight. What confused me was Reeves' assertion that at launch Sony would "not just be going for hardcore gamers" with the PS3. And just how many casual gamers are going to fork out for one at that price, David? Honestly, for a company that's been so in tune with it's consumer base since the first PlayStation (to a far greater degree than Microsoft or Nintendo, I'd argue), it's a bit baffling to see Sony make such a hash of things recently.

I've been one to stick up for the PS3 and Sony over the coming weeks but now it's just ridiculous. theres bad news after bad news, and they always try to have a good spin on things.

it is becoming so obvious that the Wii is the only decent console this generation to get at launch. i'm sure the 360 and ps3 will have lots of good games in the next year, but they have been quite slow to react.

So true.Maybe there's a false sense of invincibility running throughout the company.Sony is big, but there not that big. They became big by listening and providing, not by telling and spinning.

This Reeves nuggets would certainly suggest so:

"We've built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000 that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even if it didn't have games."

Honestly, could it stink any more of complacency? icon_kero.gif

This is a huge hit for Sony. I'll always defend Sony because I've always been a Sony supporter with Ninty close behind, but this is a HUGE hit. Motorstorm and Heavenly Sword were 2 major reasons why I planned to get one at launch. This is going to hurt Sony a s**tload come launch time, unless they dish out some seriously killer-app games.

It's true though, At least in Japan and America launch day PS3s will be sold out insanely quickly. As long as it's not Ridge Racer delayed I'm sure Sony can do ok with the launch.

According to the SCE CEO for Europe, the first 5 million would sell out without any games available for it icon_smile.gif

And they were going to release the PS3 earlyer, then delayed it due to the blu-ray specs not being in place. What launch titles would we have had then for the PS3? Wonder what will happen next?

PS3 Delayed Once More!

A swift kick up the bum for Sony.

Today it was announced that the Sony PS3 would be delayed til early 2007 to the PS3 controller could be "improved" on and the launch titles could be finished.

Spokeman for Sony stated "We have decided to make a new controller that is 10000000000 times better than Wiis. This controller will come with an attachment witch will serve as a third analog stick thingy and will detect motion! Our launch games have all been delayed til Q2 2007 to take advantage of this new aspect in our controller. Yep, you'll be buying the PS3 3months before the games are released for an amazing AU$1,000. But remember, it is because you can play Blu-Ray DVDs before games are released. This way you'll be so sick to death of us pushing for blu-ray you'll finally be able to get your hands on some games! Woo we rule! And remember... The FBI was founded in 1492 by.... err... Demons! And remember to buy our cool brand spanking new vacumm cleaners which suck... All kinds of things! Remember, Sony Vacumm clearners... You buy 'cause we suck!!!"

PALGN will keep you posted on this issue.

******************

Just a little bit of fun there for a laugh. Don't take it seriously or anything. Hopefully, what launch titles they do have in store for us will be great and take us by surprise. But if anything, Ridge Racer will be the one that saves the PS3... If any.

On the bright side, at least the 3 games that have been delayed will be better when they are eventually released.

Sony Fanboys/Girls would buy a PS3 just because of FF13 and if there is a possibility of a Kingdoms Hearts 3. Others will buy it for MGS4, as well as the spoilt brats who will no doubt get one.

And don't forget the people that will rob stores to get their hands on one.

^Id vote for some of the latter.

1000 ps3s = $1,000,000

PS I just doubt they can build the hype there was for the 360, Because of the fact it had so much time to infiltrate the advertising market when it was pushed back etc.

But who knows, I think people are going to really let their money talk when it comes time.

If it's Sony then it is a Phoney.

Will Sony offer us even more hype & lies and an equal proportion of let downs?

Will the PS3 come with the Rootkit Spyware & virus program that Sony kindly bundles with their music CD's?

Will the PS3 without the HDMI ports run movies at 1080 resolution - or will Sony keep the fact that it can't to themselves until after buyers have paid?

Will those games ship with plenty of Advertisements?

Will Sony just pay the $90 million they owe to the rightful patent owner and put back the rumble feature?

Who gives a dam about how many PS2 have sold. McDonalds have sold a trillion fatty hamburgers but do you think they are a beacon of future success right now?

I owned a PSX and PS2 and apart from the unreliable hardware and piles upon piles of me-too-game titles – some of it was fun. But I, like many, are no longer turned on by the never ending Sony DRM, Spyware, in-game-advertising, poor quality and over priced trash they have on offer. I'll buy a Wii and have fun, and maybe an XBOX 360 for pretty pictures.

Sony stink of financial ruin. These guys are a train wreck and PS3 smells like poo.

And yet none of those games are available on launch. Some fanboys and fangirls have enough patience to wait for a game they actually want. That said, there's enough of the hardcore elite that I'm sure the first 2 shipments will sell out (3 million world wide, if I recall correctly - 2 million on launch and 1 million per month after), but after that... well, the sony name doesn't sell consoles without games to back it up. The PSP has proven this.

Sony really seems to be quite arrogant now. The false sense of invincibility, as was mentioned earlier, is very reminiscent of the SNES era Nintendo. And we all know how that went down.

Im with Peabody on ALL his comments,

You hurt my brain.

I can imagine that the PS3 could very possibly sell out, people know the cost well ahead of time, anyone who wants one will save, and I can't see the Playstation fanbase dwindling to nothing at its launch.
