E3 2006: Final hardware and controller design revealed

PS3 News | High resolution pictures of the final PS3 design.

We've gotten our hands on some high resolution pictures of the PS3, and it seems Sony has altered their initial PS3 design. First, they've gone back to black as the base colour of their console. Secondly, the controller has reverted to the Dual Shock shape seen on their past consoles, as opposed to last year's 'bannanarang' shape.

To be honest, I actually like the design of the boomerang controller a little better. Anyway, the faithful dual shock style is still very good:)

One question though, on the controller it has 1, 2, 3, 4 lights. I suppose that is to indicate player 1-4. I thought Sony said it supports 7 controllers? What happen to 5-7?

Wow, sony sure are playing it safe, same old controller(basically) and same old ps2 black.

Someone give sony a dictionary and tell em to look up the word 'innovative', oh wait they already did, and saw a pic of the wii and the wiimote, and proceeded to rip it off, in true sony fashion, half-arsed-ely.

Geez that thing is bloody ugly.

It was ugly when it was first revealed last year, and it's still ugly now. This design will NEVER 'grow' on me. eeek.

I guess Sony Japan designed it, since that design has generally been poorly received in western countries (according to forums i've seen).

If only all it's power could be put into that sleek little Revolution box!!

i agree plus with the motion sention wat it if u move it a lillte bit? its hard to keep it completly still. and does any 1 know any extra details like is it backlight, hedad fone port etc

in all honesty, i like the design. but then, i quite liked the old silver one too. no accounting for taste, eh?

i also don't see how changing anything from a concept machine to the final (at this stage) product is a lie, and considering those USB ports are now on the front of the machine, how these are considered lies either. regardless, i love how UK:R have conveniently removed the "Design and Specifications are subject to change without notice" line, GG Idiots.

I've seen worse, but hey, it doesn't look very good, it's true. But that's not going to stop me wanting one. At least they got rid of the hideous controller.

It's bigger then the Xbox 360 too. Might even rival the original Xbox. Bring on the hypocrites who said the Xbox was bad because it was too big. Also it's missing 1/3 of the USB ports. Which is what dopple's picture was pointing out. But what confuses me is that the PS3 dev kits have 6 USB ports on them.

Going with the same controller is cool and fair enough. You don't want to alienate your broad based gaming constituents.

The console on the other hand is ugly.

MS and Nintendo have outdone Sony in the aesthetics department. Sorry if I offended the Sony fanboys but I think the 360 and Wii look better.

Won't matter in 5 years Sony will make it look like a pancake.

Won't matter in Japan people will buy it because it will have a half ass FF XIII on it.

What is with the ugly clamshell shape?! Have they had problems with people spilling their drinks after resting it ontop or something?!??!

Anyways other than the general curves I think the machine is fine. I prefer the black.

I love how they've kept the dual shock design of the controller cuz that is one awesome control pad....well maybe not awesome....but i'm used to it now and wireless....oh man...bring it on.

Also the fact that the machine runs very quietly is another plus.

Imo the minimalistic look is the best...and if it wasn't for the ugly curves I think the Ps3 would have it covered.

i think it can

and i agree its not the best looking console but it look alright in black. i think out of the next gen the black rev looks cool to me coz of the blue light which looks cool then the ps3 equal with the 360 but if there was a black 360 that would put it in second place

Man you guys are a lil it too conservative.I reckon that gloss red wii looks wicked, i love how the wii will have a range of colours from launch, other than black and plastic grey.

I can't understand why people are ok and even happy with keeping the same controller.It's basically the same design(bar this dual shock nonsense) as the very first psx controller, which was what.......released circa 1998??What is sony's research and devolpment team working with in terms of funding???Where is the research and where is the development in a controller which is almost a carbon copy of one made over 8 yrs ago?

What is everyone complaining about? Sure, it's big and black, but so was the original Sony Playstation 2. Yet, people still purchased the console. While on a similar note, being an owner of a silver PStwo is nice, but there was no way a Sony Playstation 2 would live under my roof.

I haven't done much reading on the ps3 but can anyone confirm whether the controller has analog L2 and R2 buttons because they sure look like analog on the pics.

notice the disk feeder its BLACK!!! and the rest of it is silver its looks horrible plus ive seen a black 1 with a whit disk feeder. it is quite hidioues
