E3 2006: Sony pre-E3 press conference

PS3 Feature | A full round up of what happened.
For those of you who don't have the bandwidth to catch the conference live, we'll be updating this article with keypoints for you.

Newest info will be at the top.

1848 - It's over. Let the ranting begin.

1847 - We might be seeing a Devil May Cry and Resident Evil game in the future.

1844 - 2 million units will be ready for the worldwide launch.

1842 - Two different models will be available on the console's launch - one version with a 20GB hard drive, and another with a 60GB hard drive.

The PS3 will launch in Japan on November 11th, with the 20GB available for 59,800 yen, and retailers being able to set their own price for the 60GB. The console will hit the US on November 17th at $499US for the 20GB version, and $599US for the 60GB version.

Most importantly, Europe and Australia will also get the console on November 17, with the 20GB version coming in at 499 Euros 499 Euros ($825 AUD), and the 60Gb version at 599 Euros ($990 AUD).

1840 - Dillian, from Incognito, the makers of Warhawk, hits the stage The new controller "Allows us to change to kinetic controls".

1838 - Showing Warhawk, which will take advantage of the new controller. This is a flight sim. It seems to require a lot more movement than we've seen on the Wii games.

1836 - Six degrees of freedom. Yup, you guessed it. Same motion tilt technology as Wii. Does not require anything external, and is wireless of course.

1835 - Showing PS3 controller! Looks pretty much the same as the PS2...? New technology - what could it be?

1834 - New Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer. Another must download.

1828 - Final Fantasy XIII has some nice CGI.

1823 - Now it's EA's line up. Their new NBA game looks pretty, and is actually running on the PS3.
A model of Tiger Woods is shown, as is the new Madden. Need for Speed - Carbon is next up, followed by Army of Two and Medal of Honour Airbourne. There will be "more than 10 titles" from EA on PS3, they say - we presume they mean on launch.

1817 - More games are all shown in CGI. They are:
  • Assassin's Creed
  • Gundamn - Mobile Suit
  • Coded Arms - Assult
  • Ridge Racer 7
  • Brothers in Arms - Hell's Highway
  • Tekken 5
  • Sonic The Hedgehog
  • Virtual Tennis 3
  • Virtua Fighter 5
  • Stranglehold

1810 - Back to Ken. That ends the "playable section". He hands over to Hirai again.

1806 - Ted Price from Insomniac is now demoing Resistance - Fall of Men. Awesome FPS. Graphics look like what we'd expect from a top-of-the-line PC game. Impressive particle effects. Will include full featured multiplayer.

1804 - "The hunter become the hunted". There's a guy running around shooting people in a jungle. Developed by Naughty Dog. Ummm... Didn't see a name.

1801 - Cars driving people shooting each other from windows. Jumping out of cars, still shooting each other. It's called Eight Days. A tanker crashes into the scene. Some guy throws a lighter and everything blows up. Graphics / cimematics are Killzone quality.

1800 - Two unrelevealed titles coming up.

1755 - Showing some future PS3 games:
  • L.A.I.R. - dragons flying arround. Fighting on dragons...
  • The Getaway - great character & environment models
  • Afrika (working title) - lots of african amnimals walking around. Animal sim?
  • Everyboy's Golf - the usual.
  • Monster Kingdom - Looks like an adventure game. "7 doors and 7 worlds await him."

1752 - Heavenly Sword shown now. Graphics looks great. Nice focus & dust effects. Animation is really, really good. Cinematic camera angles. Destructive environment. Reaction commands. Using the dual shock again.

1750 - Formula 1 is up. A PSP is being used as a wing mirror! "Seemless intergration between PS3 and PSP". "Add a great dimension to this game". Do we need to buy 2 PSPs to get both mirrors?

1747 - Next up; Bill Rich is showing off Genji 2. Looks current generation, but with a lot more going on in the background. Plays a little like Devil May Cry. Having some problems defeating the boss - off camera. Many different ways of playing the game, apparently.

1741 - Purchase screen is shown - similar to Xbox Live. Shops also available in-game. Singstar is shown next. Additional songs will be available to purchase at the "SingStore". Find the video & song you want to download. No pricing given. Parental controls on how much you can spend. He downloads "Survivor" and plays it. My Singstar will allow you to customise your experience with skins, etc. You can record and upload your performances using a camera! Singstar Porn here we come.

1740 - "PlayStation Card" will be available for purchase various content to add points to your PS account.

1739 - Boots from memory stick. Showing Ridge Racer running on a PSP - can change screen the size. Full screen or normal.

1736 - Online will be vital to PS3. HDD in box will help with online content. "Create a space that brings community". Mentions creating something similar to MySpace - a "viral society". Maintaining an open platform, so it will be FREE of charge. There will also be an additional channel for more content for both PS3 and PSP. E-distribution of PSP content through online. Games for PS emulator on PSP!

1735 - Hirai talking about the online features of the PS3. Notice that there's no mention of the controller - clearly they're saving this up.

1733 - Ooooh, it's augmented reality. Place cards on the table, with the image picked up by Eyetoy. Monsters substantiated on top. Ken puts down "boss card" turns out to be a duck! [Death to all ducks. - Ed]

1732 - Back to Ken, who introduces a card battle game. Using the Eyetoy.

1731 - Next GT will be out soon after PS3 launch, apparently.

1728 - They show how GT has changed over the years [Can't imagine that will take up too much time. - Ed], and show the grand canyon track.

1717 - Grand Trusimo HD is shown by Kazunori Yamauchi. Holding PS2 dual shock controller? Looks... HD. It's basically just showing that the PS3 can do HD.

1716 - Ken Kutagari is up, and he's going to show PS3 games.

1715 - Final development kits shipping now. Six months before launch. Shows close up PS3 there is an empty holder... Where is the controller?

1714 - Worldwide in November 2006. Australia and Europe specifically mentioned!

1714 - Every PS3 will have a hard drive standard in the unit, to be utlised by all games.

1712 - Now pushing BlueRay, trying to convince us that it was the PS2 that brought on the DVD revolution. Yup. PS3 will promote HDTV and BlueRay to the masses.

1711 - PSP will interoperable with the PS3. The PS3 backwards compatable for CD and DVD.

1710 - PS3 has gigabit ethernet and a removeable HD. PS3 supports the 1080p resolution, and the latest Dolby surround. "Unprecedented power for developers to express themselves".

1709 - Hirai is back, talking about Cell specs.

1707 - Interviews from Sydney! They're showing people around the world talking about the PS3. No new informaton, though.

1704 - Talking about PSP functionality (web browser, RSS etc..) VOIP, Camera and GPS coming soon!

1703 - PSP "Greatest Hits" unveiled - it's the budget line.
  • Ape Escape
  • Twisted Metal
  • Everybody's/Hot Shots Golf
  • ATV
  • Wipeout Pure

1703 - Showing footage from upcoming PSP games;
  • Syohon Filter: Dark Mirror
  • Loco Roco
  • Planet PSP - PSP guide program
  • Killzone Liberation
  • World Tour soccer 2
  • Talkman (the translator)
  • Gangs of London

1700 - 17 million PSP units have been shipped so far, apparently. It's the fastest selling unit for Sony.

1656 - The PS2 has shipped 100 million units world wide, making it a solid base of the PS3. The PS3 has taken so long to come out, because Sony want to give us the right product at the right time.

1655 - Kaz Hirai starts pre-conference spiel. Blah, blah.

1639 - The conference is expected to begin at approximately 5:00 PM PDT, which is 20 mins from now.

1627 - Still waiting. Maybe the new Killzone footage hasn't finished rendering...?

1615 - Still nothing. Waiting...

1610 - People are lining up enter the hall. The start seems to be delayed. Shock!

1555 - The conference starts in approximately 5 mins. Stay tuned!

Last year Ninty's press conference was delayed by roughly half an hour. Worst part was that the announcements kept ringing that it would start in 5 minutes, then 2 minutes (this came 20 minutes later).

Pretty unimpressive that they gave up on their old design and has worked on a controller that has a similar feature as the Wii's controller (one though). A little luckluster.

Incredible... just incredible...

$1000 AUD for 60GB SKU... wow.

What's up with Euro and USD the same... that's like 25% increase... WTF? We were with the Europe pricing too, so will getting the high price.

Just finished watching the conference. playable demoes were impressive, especially Heavenly Sword. It's not suprising to see them ripping off Wii controller, but then again I could care less, just gimme Heavenly sword. And damn is it expensive...
