A PS3 price for PAL parts?

PS3 News | Less than AU$1,000/£400, suggests Sony executive.
Not all of the gaming news in the world revolves around America and Japan, yet given the recent avalanche of PS3 information, it's almost a surprise that we PAL types may now receive even more, especially before E3. However, Jeux France is reporting that a radio interview has taken place, and that a Sony executive has spilled some rather big beans.

George Fornay, the President of Sony Computer Entertainment France and Senior Vice-President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has not only confirmed a target European release in November but possibly a price as well. Given that we're using an internet translater and not our own lingual skills, we can only take this as something of an indicator. So what's the magic number? €500 or, at current rates, roughly AU$850 or £350.

This may not be the final number, but does at least give us an idea at the very least. If the price does end up being €500, then it's likely that the Australian and UK prices will be as above. The Xbox 360 prices are all equivalent in the PAL territories, so there is no reason not to believe that Sony won't play the same way. €500 was also earmarked by George as a point that may be considered expensive for a games console but cheap for a HD/Blu-Ray player.

AU$850 is better than a grand but the wait for November is still on, as is the wait for the final price.

£350 is absolutely obscene, I wouldn't even pay that much for a good console.

To be honest, I expected it to be $900AUD. That's a figure I've come to terms with, and learned to accept. However, $1000 is alot of money. Like, ALOT of money.

I'll still get it, but, God, they'd better put on the show of a lifetime at E3...

I'll buy one. I don't think at launch though.

I expected the 360 and the PS3 to be around $200 more than their predecessors, instead it's looking like $150.

I was expecting a $1000 price tag, which I guess is still possible at this stage. But if it was, how would they expect to move any good amount of PS3s?

I felt that the pricepoint was going to be $999. With this news it's making me re-think that, but I still feel that to go less than a grand is going to be too costly for even Sony to eat.

I have also heard the RRP of $850 from some retailers as well - their Sony reps have indicated to them that price point as being most likely.

Nick, how can you say that the X360 and PS3 are only $150 more expensive than predecessors? Even at 850 the PS3 is more than that over the PS2, and at the core system price of 499, the X360 is pretty close to RRP of the original. Or is my memory faulty? icon_smile.gif

$850?

Good god. The revolution could very well be a third the price of the PS3 at this rate icon_dumb.gif

The Blue-Ray DVD player is sited to be $1400 AU. So the console can't be far off this?

Really, $1000 is probably what we all expected...still pricey for nothing special really, it's not like I'm going to run out and buy Blue-Ray DVDs.

Pending on the games, no chance I'll be buying this at launch at this price, because it would have to drop in 6 months for sure....

Meanwhile, a Microsoft employee is rubbing his hands with glee.

Consumers don't look at specs or features, they look at at games and price. With the Premium 360 costing $200 less, many people will sway to their side of the room.

Keep wishing! It's not like the 360 has dropped in price anywhere, thought that might change around the ps3 launch. $1000 is just so much money though, even the 360's launch price was too much for me, I don't know how many people can afford that much money...

The X360 is unlikely to drop price because of demand and because the tech it uses is already established stuff. However, with PS3 being so dependent on the Blu-ray format, as blu-ray drops in price to manufacture, I would expect PS3 to also drop. So, it's not impossible that PS3 will drop in the first six months.

I think the 360 is fairly priced to be honested. You get a bang for your buck for $649.95 and if you shop around you can actually get a decent deal/game. Plus if your strugglign for cash, you can always go the core pack and slowly collect the extras. But regardless, M$ aren't going to drop the price any time soon, they don't need to.

Put it this way, for $999.95 I got the system, 3 games and an extra controller. PS3 is gonna get you a fancy Blue-Ray DVD player that plays "Remasterd and super directors cut" Spiderman for $49.95 RRP.

I think the PS3 will start out like the PSP, slow up take with a price drop to follow soon after. They probably think the world will go nuts because of the playstation name, but they'll have to drop to price to actually get the ball rolling.

EDIT - I'm sure all the Nintendo execs are sitting around the board room laughing their guts out. I mean, if Nintendo launches for $200-300 AU with RRP games at $79.95 RRP, they will clean up.

The 360 isn't such a great bargain to me, There are plenty of games still being released on PS2 to amuse me, and not only do I not have to pay for a new console, the games themselves are cheaper.

Well personally, it offers a lot to me and easily worth the cash Music/Video streaming wirelessly to my 5.1 sound system is fantastic and easy.

And actually getting to see games running on my massive HD television is bliss.

I do this with my Xbox already icon_smile.gif

That's the other thing, even if I bought a 360 I would be stuck with a normal TV unless I paid a few grand more and bought one icon_cry.gif

Yeowch! This next gen is far too expensive for me, I'm going with nintendo..

I'm still enjoying this generation on Xbox and I will continue to do so for some time. There's stacks of great games I still haven't played, and they're all so cheap now!

Ditto. I will eventually get a PS3 when it doesn't require me to take out a bank loan to be able to afford one. icon_lol.gif

I got an xbox 360 and it's a rip! As if i'm gonna stream stuff thru the 360 when it's easier to do it with a pc. Also nearly all my devices plug into the output source directly, so there is no need to go thru another device. The only thing you can copy to the hdd are music files, everything else has to be streamed....how crap! And 20 gigs?! What is this an ipod?! It's a home console, what's wrong with a 60 - 80 gig hdd?! How about 1 gig of system ram also?! 500mgs for graphics and the other 500 for whatever else!

It's like an xbox with a graphics upgrade and a wireless controller.

I seriously can't wait for the PS3. I'm prepared to pay $1000. Seriously with no region coding....it's like getting the NTSC and PAL consoles! So think of it as $500 each! Also Blu-Ray is new tech! So you can justify the price cuz it's like upgrading you pro-logic to 5.1! Just think of it like that! Honestly with the changes being made with the ps3 (hopefully they add the physx card and have one of the cell processors dedicated to it) it seems like true next gen instead of an upgrade.

Nintendo.....well they're always the best (imo) so anything they come up with i'll be waiting for with baited breath.

And I have no problem with Microsoft (infact I like them alot) and I really liked the original Xbox....I just think the Xbox 360 is way overpriced for what it is.

in all honesty, i don't think Sony can afford to go much higher than $850AUD, and even $850 seems high.

$1000 is a HUGE psychological impediment to most people, and the closer you get to that, the worse something like this will sell.

if i was a gambling man, i would say $850 is about the limit they can afford to reach, even if it means a significant loss in the short term, going above this will only be all the more detremental longer term.

^ I think you're right obs, it's not like sony haven't taken a hit on low priced hardware before (ps2 anyone?). As long as it's not above 1k i'm happy.

20gb and as soon as you start up you discover you only have 13gb available.

Then after downloading a few of 500-1000Mb downloads you're under 10gb. It's easy to see where it all goes.

Damn, the 360 left me broke, imagine if you went and bought a PS3 for a grand. Then you'd have to spend cash on games too...

Will be waiting for the price drop, or will pretty just have my 360 and a Rev..
