Some PS3 information slips through

PS3 News | About online, multimedia and ... a release window?
If there is one area in gaming that Microsoft have the current advantage, it’s with Xbox Live. Still, how long did you think Sony were going to put with this? According to the latest issue of PSM, a US publication, this is all about to change in the next-generation.

It looks like Sony are determined "go way beyond mimicking Xbox Live". Apparently, it’s going to be called PlayStation Network and it’s not just in the business of offering matchmaking and ranking lists. No, according to the information that has been circulating, you will be able to download music and movies using an service not unlike the iTunes Store and you will be able to use the console as a Location Free Player. What on Earth does that mean? It supposed to meant you can upload stuff from your PS3 – such as a DVD or Blu-Ray movie – onto your PSP.

The online service isn’t the only new thing that the PS3 will look to offer. In terms of multimedia, the PS3 will be able to function like a digital video recorder. That means you’ll be able to digitally record your favourite TV shows, similar to systems like Sky+ and TiVo or for the uninitiated, it’s like recording with old-school VHS tapes only open to many more options. Interestingly, Sony reckons that the fact that the PS3 will play Blu-Ray discs shouldn’t push up the price too much. Somehow, Cell is meant to be taking care of things for the most part, meaning there is no need to be paying as much as you would for a Blu-Ray player in itself. Still, Blu-Ray players currently retail at up to $US1000 (though consumer electronics markups are massive, so take it with a grain of salt - Ed.), so how much less will it really be?

Other pieces of information that have slipped through include the news that PS3 dev kits run faster than what was originally predicted (yay?), there are apparently “loads” of games in development and the PS3 will receive firmware updates just like the PSP. Finally, US developers are being told to prepare for an autumn release. So what does this mean for PAL gamers? Summer for Europeans and Winter for Aussies in 2007, if history repeats.

Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait till E3 before any of this is actually confirmed. However, if we get any news, we’ll be sure to pass it on.

I didn't think that any 360 games came on multiple DVD's.? Anyway, I really don't mind 2 disc games on the cube. Sure, it'd be better to just have it on one, but I don't really find it too much of an effort to change discs once during a game.

They can hold 5x the amount of a DVD: 25GB!
But will any developers, anywhere, want to spend 5 times as long as they already do on games? I doubt it. So the only major change gamers are likely to see from this is a bigger hole in their wallets.

Changing discs can be a pain, and could be impossible for some open-ended games, but I can't see Blu-ray becoming the new gaming format any time soon.

Is a much bigger capacity a gimmick? Sure games it on DVD, but with consoles like X360 and PS3, they have to be compressed, which lowest the quality/ amount of stuff they can put it.
It sure is, for example, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, is one of the smaller games on Xbox and it's gaming world is considered large. GTA:SA is also not even close to the magical 9GB mark (not even 6GB I think). The new generation of consoles have powerful multicore CPUs which can decompress code on the fly. New technologies allow for graphic files to be smaller. As the new generation progresses better compression tools will be developed so more code will be able to be "squished" onto the DVDs.

Would it be too much to ask for you to not do this part at the end of your posts? I'm sorry but somehow it irritates me greatly...

P.S. Should we have a (Blu-Ray vs HD-DD) vs DVD thread?

Don't forget it could be dual-layer-ed making 50GB of storage madness!

You said it 838 La! Imagine that! I didn't say that any X360 games have come out with multiple discs yet, you know. But it'll happen soon, I've read the articles.. I was predicting it from day 1, which was why I applauded Sony's decision.

Well that depends on whether you see yourself playing it quite regularly or just now and then.
The PS3 will be quite expensive when it is first released while PS2s can be found quite cheap these days. If you think you are serious enough about the purchase and that you'll use it quite extensively then I recommend picking up a PS2 now. However if you don't see yourself playing it too much then maybe waiting for a PS3 would be better in the long term. Just keep in mind that you won't want to be buying a PS3 at launch if you're not going to be playing it too much. The price could be a real bitch. (it could surprise us too but we'll see)
