TGS 2005: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots trailer and details

PS3 News | Snake's back... And looking rather old.
Metal Gear Solid has always been one of the best reasons to buy a PlayStation - and that trend looks set to continue on the PS3, with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. While information is still fairly thin on the ground - expect a whole lot more tomorrow - we've managed to come across the first TGS trailer.

It features a really, really old Snake doing what he does best in what can only be described as an urban wasteland. It also features some of the best graphics ever seen. However, are they real time or pre-rendered? Going on past MGS trailers, we're saying real time.

The trailer is roughly 8 minutes long, and 21MB in size. To download it, right click this space and click Save Target As. This trailer comes to us from the good folks at GameMeca.

As some of you may have seen online, Japanese gaming bible Famitsu have provided some substantial details on the game in their latest issue. The game, as evidenced by the trailer, will be set in a war zone. Tanks, robots, soldiers and other nefarious instruments of evil will all be present and correct. As also seen in the trailer, Snake (or is he...?) is very old, and has a robot companion - the funkily titled Metal Gear Mark II. Judging by the trailer, it looks like Otacon will control him. Series nancy boy Raiden will also be back, much to the chagrin of many dedicated fans. He will deliver hair care advise to Snake through his codec. Maybe.

Series creator, writer and so on, Hideo Kojima, as stated he plans to move the series from 'real' to 'natural'. Right. The infamous '!' enemies display when they spot Snake will also be gone, replaced by, erm, facial expressions, of all things. There will also be psychological warfare implemented by enemy soldiers. What exactly does this mean? Beats us.

What about Snake's eye patch? Judging by the trailer, it will be the new radar, with details about the weakpoints of various enemies, where enemy soldiers are located, and so on. This will provide relief for those who struggled with Snake Eater.

Expect more on the game as TGS continues. The official site has also gone live here.

it's funny that MGS2 was what hyped me up about the PS2 (well, that and GT3) and now it looks as though MGS4 will do the same with the PS3.

i can't wait icon_smile.gif

^ Figured you'd be excited about this one Obs. icon_razz.gif

I reckon it's an awesome trailer! Good ol' snake, still smoking. And he's an old man now too. Dunno what to think about the mo though.

Am I going to actually believe that is is real time, running off PS3 hardware? I really really want to, but after Killzone... I don't know.

Regardless, that was one of the coolest trailers I've seen this year. I love the look of what's been shown so far, very gritty and real. I can't believe Kojima and crew came up with something as amazing as this so quickly. If that is in-game... oooh man.. I am so getting a PS3.

ok, i've watched the trailer now... OMG my hype level just went up exponentially by the minute...

Pre-Rendered?
well one tag line is "Forget Pre-Rendered Stuff", and like the article said, the MGS guys and gals have a history of releasing real-time trailers, as opposed to pre-rendered stuff. besides, i don't think it's insanely better than what you see for PC using the top-specced machines, i'm going to venture that this is real, but honestly, if it looks even half as good, i'll be happy.

when is it set?
"X years after Big Shell"
if we take X in roman numerals, then Snake could be 49 years old. though he still looks too old. BUT, part way through, Snake has an attack of some sort and injects himself in the neck, my guess is that he's suffering the onset of the FoxDie virus and the injection is something that slows the virus. given Naomi Hunter (the virii "inventor" from MGS) is rumoured to return, this makes some sense.

Clones have accelerated ageing - should be some info around on Dolly the sheep and the same subject.

Ok, just my opinion, and im not even trying to flame so....

I really dislike the game metal gear solid(specifically twin snakes).

Id heard such great things about it and heard snippets of the story and the whole setting-everything-just sounded wicked good.So i bought it, watched all the lil intro movies, got psyched about it.....and then i played it.

Oh geez what a let down.I think the main thing for me was the controls.Egad-i died like 5 times in that first room where u emerge from the water and get onto the elevator that ....liquid snake(?) just got on.

And i realised after i beat that the actual game title showed on screen icon_eek.gif ...i dont think anyone was even meant to die in that first bit!

Maybe its just me.I like to run and gun rather then hide in the shadows. But i just couldnt do it.....the controls.....terrible.Just terrible. That game was....*thinks*......yes, the biggest let down of a game ever.Maybe i expected too much.....

Again, i did not mean to offend anyone, you are quite welcome to enjoy this game, each to their own icon_smile.gif, but was it just me?Please no flames ive tried to be cool about this...

^ you sort of answered why you died so much in the first room... it's most definately not a "run and gun" game. the controls suck for this purely because that wasn't how the game was designed. the more you get seen, the more enemies come.

this isn't a flame, i'm just letting you know. i understand why people didn't (don't) like them, it took me a while to warm to the first MGS title.

Its just SO not me to leave an enemy 'un-killed' lol.IMO opinion, Winback for the n64(or ps2 if it was basically the same game) was what i thought mgs was like.Winback rocked my f**ckin socks!

It had its stealthy moments, but it also had just plain bad ass firefights with enemys and ducking and weaving between cover, hiding up againt walls, locking onto an enemy, and jumping out and blasting them ten feet away. That was a sweet.......sweet......underated game.It had the perfect mix of stealth and all out, no pussy-footing around action.

Its a crying shame too.i WANTED to like it.......i truly did.I was so psyched for it and then i played it.

Anyone played winback and mgs?Any thoughts?(btw fool-proof way to catch snake.......put smoke detectors in every room).

ROFLMAO icon_lol.gif

i don't remember winback, so i don't know. was it like Syphon Filter?

Syphon Filter (to me) was MGS on speed. what MGS would've been if you could run and gun, minus those couple of stealth missions.

initially i preferred SF to MGS, but once i got into the groove of MGS, i found it much more enjoyable (not to mention replayable) than SF.

i know the devs didn't want people to compare MGS and SF, but unfortunately, i think it's inevitable.
I dunno.....never played syphon filter icon_confused.gif

Everyone i knew reffered to winback as a poor mans mgs, so after winback was a hit(for me at least....) i thought mgs would roxor my soxor, but, i couldnt bring myself to play it until it ended up on a nintendo console(well....ended up on a nintendo console AGAIN, if you wanna get techy).

It just i dunno.I have so many games and such few spare time to myself and i gave mgs a solid(oops i didnt even mean that lol.....solid lol) 2 hours or so to get into it and try to enjoy it.2 hours later, back in case, ssbm back in cube.

My idea of enjoyment isnt hiding behind a crate wating for a guard to pass and then rolling to the next crate/locker/behind wall.I still love the idea of the story though(or what i know of it....see 'limited'), its very complex and again im just sad i didnt get into it.

Hey, it's never too late! Just get back in there. MGS1 was my favourite game on the PSX, it was unlike any other game I had played before. There had never been a game like this that placed so much emphasis on story. I really bought into that. Twin Snakes is just a sexed up version of an already great game, so it really couldn't go wrong.

You have to actually finish the game before making your mind up about it. It needs to be experienced as a whole, not as a 2 hour play through. But if you really didn't like it, then don't worry about it. It just ain't for you.

It is official, this is THE reason to own a PS3. Forget Vision Gran Turismo...

I can assure you it's all real-time! It all looks insanely detailed and I don't think any current PC card could get that detail just yet... (remember the RSX is 2X more powerful than 2 Nvidia 6800GTs)

And yes to tell the truth, in the large screenshots, the grapchis are excellent but certainly not 'O MY GOSH!!'.The faces look superb but especially with otacon, from the face down he looks rather avg-ish.The lab coat looks fairly standard.

Either way-i believe them to be real time cause there only great-not perfect icon_wink.gif

Konami said before the Tokyo Game Show that this demo was going to be real-time. Presumably to prevent forum speculation like this. icon_wink.gif So yea, it's real-time.

Very impressive... very impressive indeed!
icon_biggrin.gif

Almost makes me want to go out and get the first three games and play through them.
With this and "Vision GT"... the PS3 is looking pretty sweet.

BUT, I think I'll stick with what I'm into right now.

The graphics were nice, but what really impressed me was how real it looked as a whole. That did not look like a game to me. It looked real. The light dust storm, the leaves blowing around in the breeze, an amazingly accurate depiction of a war torn city, character movement's that scream "That not a bunch of polygons! That a real person!!!". I could go on but you get the picture. It was real. Real. Really really real really real real.......real (feeling kinda crazy right now)

If this really is what playing MGS 4 is going to be like, then my prayers are answered.

i thought Older Solid Snake looked familiar, then Solidus Snake joined PALGN and his avatar reminded me...

certainly adds some more conspiracy to the lead up of the game, something MGS games were never short of.

now i know they are "twins", but could the "Snake" in the MGS4 trailer actually be Solidus? again, i know that he is "Dead", but to quote Rimmer, "Death isn't the handicap it used to be", particularly in the MGS world.

maybe "Solid" is disguised as "Solidus"

whatever the reason, it certainly makes the wait more unbearable

Solidus is dead. Big Boss is dead. They've said it a million times that the lead character for this game is none other than Solid Snake.

Also that magical arm was so stupid.

if you read my post, i never said anything about lead characters, just that perhaps the "snake" in the trailer was Solidus.

yes, yes it was, but it leads creedance to potentially resurrecting Solidus and/or Big Boss.

Afterall, didn't Liquid want BB's body in MGS? Maybe Ocelot (or Liquid's arem) is finishing the work started in MGS.

i'm just throwing ideas around that i have while at work (sure as sh!t beats that), a lot aren't worth more than the initial thought, but i still post them around anyway. maybe i'm just too hyped for the game (especially since i probably won't be playing it until 2008 or so minimum). i don't mind looking stupid when these theories are proved false, but at least i'm having a go.

sheesh.

Except he had a conversation with Ocelot, who made light of the fact that he had started smoking again.

I do think you're grasping for straws here, mate. icon_wink.gif
