Next-gen Sonic on the way: screenshots inside.

PS3 News | Naka to direct PS3 and X360 versions.
To the surprise of approximately nobody, SEGA announced in Japan today that Sonic the Hedgehog would be making an appearance on both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It was also suggested that we'll be seeing the Blue One's new title at some time in 2006, and SEGA even saw fit to give us some spangly screenshots that were taken from footage shown at E3 back in May. You can see them here.

Almost equally unsurprising was the news that Sonic creator Yuji Naka would be directing the new game, with Naka-san chuntering on about how "the 'rebirth of Sonic' will offer an unparalleled sense of speed that is only possible using the processing power afforded by the new systems". Despite our slight cynicism though, even we have to admit that the static screenshots alone suggest that the game will be played at a speed of cheek-flapping proportions.

Anyway, fingers crossed that we get a new, more substantial trailer at the Tokyo Game Show (September 16th to 18th, as if you'd forget) or, even better, something that's actually playable. Whatever is eventually shown, you'll hear about it here.

A trailer was shown at E3, with those screenshot captures featured in it. Sega have only made the title official now...

Well, they loook good, but the way Sony and M$ have been going on about next gen graphics... I thought they'd be better.

I mean, while these screenshots show something that looks better than what current gen consoles can muster, is it really that different?

It might just be me though...

I thought I'd seen them before, Mark. Article updated. icon_smile.gif
