PS3 to come equipped with faster Blu-Ray drives than expected?

PS3 News | Sony feeling Blu.
It's emerged that Sony's PlayStation 3 may well be released with a faster Blu-ray drive than initially expected at launch, after the company conceded that a quicker format could well be available by the time the console hits high street shelves.

Originally, the console looked set to come equipped with a single (1X, 36Mega bits per second) speed drive to run it's optical media. But by next spring, when PS3 is due to release in Japan, it's thought that speedier technology will be with us - 2X (72Mbps) drives are arriving this autumn, for example.

Sony has yet to finalise the precise details of what'll be in the PlayStation 3 of course, so expect plenty of speculation about what'll be in the machine right up until, well, whenever Sony make an official announcement. That could happen at September's Tokyo Game Show, though we reckon Sony will be leaving the specifications open for change for even longer than that. And we know everything, us.
