PlayStation 3 Not for Households

PS3 News | Is Ken Kutaragi lost in translation?
Last week at Sony Computer Entertainment's PlayStation Meeting, company president Ken Kutaragi appeared on stage to discuss further information on the current status of the PlayStation 3.

Kutaragi started out by reconfirming that the PS3 will be backwards-compatible with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games and support high-definition TVs. He stated that standard TV's would be eventually replaced by HD TV's (hence compatibilty) and reinstated the use of Blu-ray Discs for the future.

Then he dropped a comment that Mr Iwata and Mr Miyamoto would definitely be proud of.

"I'm aware that with all these technologies, the PS3 can't be offered at a price that's targeted towards households. I think everyone can still buy it if they wanted to," said Kutaragi to a mostly Japanese crowd. "But we're aiming for consumers throughout the world. So we're going to have to do our best [in containing the price]."

In a somewhat ominous warning. "I'm not going to reveal its price today. I'm going to only say that it'll be expensive."

The rest of the meeting was concentrated on the PS3 technology and some of the new games, including Factor 5's new creation, Lair.

Maybe it's time to re-list the little brother on Ebay again, as well as the dog, the cat and possibly Grandma... Though it still may not be enough. (PALGN will not be held responsible for any greivances as a result of the sale of family members. - Ed).

Ha Obsolete, that's only a 100 more then the PSP, so I think you can add a bit more to that. The PS3 will do 800-900+ I reckon. I love Sony, they really know how to treat their customers.

My guess = $1000 and that's without the optional harddrive

Maybe I won't be getting one at launch then. I want an Xbox 360 by Christmas time though. Hopefully there'll be some solid importing options.

We all knew it was going to be expensive - at least they aren't lying to our faces, eh?

No surprises here. But it's good to actually hear the news from the horse's mouth, that way we know it's fact, an awful, awful fact

Lovely piece of psychology.

Set expectations early so no grumbles when the time comes.

Really like to have both Xbox 360 and PS3 (funds permitting and the wife icon_wink.gif). But I'm hoping to have a Xbox 360 at Xmas too.
