PS3 could appear in playable form at Tokyo Game Show

PS3 News | Kutaragi hints at first hands-on experience this September.
Sony Computer Entertainment head honcho Ken Kutaragi has been discussing the possibility of PlayStation 3 making it's playable debut at this years' Tokyo Game Show, which is due to be held between 16-18 September.

'We hope to use the Tokyo Game Show as a chance for everyone to get to know, or possibly experience, what next-generation entertainment is all about,' said Kutaragi, speaking at the PlayStation Summit in Tokyo earlier this week. He then went on to confirm earlier suggestions that the console won't be cheap, telling the crowd of assembled press members: 'I'm not going to reveal it's price today, I'm only going to say that it'll be expensive.' Get saving, kids.

Whilst he was at it, Kutaragi-san also took the opportunity to show off the current PS3 development kit, codenamed Cytology, at the event. It runs at 2.4GHz with a 512MB memory and is roughly the size of a PC, but Sony plans to produce a smaller version in December, entitled the 'PS3 Reference Tool'. The new kit will run at 3.2GHz, just like the PS3.

Commenting on the small number of PS3 dev kits that have been shipped to date - only 450 have left Sony so far - Kutaragi went on the defensive, arguing that this wasn't due to a lack of demand. 'We've been getting a lot of requests from developers since E3 that they want more development kits for the PS3,' he said. 'The demand for the kits has gone beyond what we can handle. We've been discussing what we can do about it.'

It's pointing more and more to a reality where the PS3 just will not be in the price range of the average gamer. We all knew it was going to be expensive, but his constant reminders seem point to lessening the shock when the price is finally revealed. Only the hardcore PS3 lovers will shell out whatever Sony decides upon. I'm guessing close to or over $1000. That's expensive.

What exactly is the difference between 2.4GHz and 3.2GHz?? Okay, .8GHz, but performance wise, is there even going to be that big a difference? As far as PC CPU's go anything over 2GHz will give barely noticeable boosts in power. So I've heard anyway.

Also if the final Dev kit will be released in December that leaves less than 7 months for it's launch titles to take shape. How can that be humanly possible? Game development times range in years not months. Is Sony really pushing it?
