HDD for PS3 to be sold separately?

PS3 News | Famitsu thinks so.
Press reports coming from Japan seem to have confirmed that Sony's PlayStation 3 will not come equipped with a hard disk drive. The news, which appears in the latest edition of respected Japanese magazine Famitsu, is consistent with hints previously dropped by SCE big cheese Ken Kutaragi.

The magazine goes on to claim that the hard drive will be sold separately and that a slot for the device - designed for a 2.5" hard drive package - can be found on the underside of the PS3.

If Famitsu is right - and it should be said they're rarely wrong, as the magazine famously enjoys fabulously close connections with the Japanese games industry - then it could give a considerable advantage to Microsoft's Xbox 360, which is shipping with a hard drive.

More news as we get it, folks.

I thought this was already known - but the 360 hardrive is separate too?

although 360 may come with a tiny harddrive and make you buy another one?

^^ I believe Microsoft are propsoing to market one version of the 360 with a HDD, one without. Could be wrong, but that was the last I heard personally on the subject...

They won't sell one sans HDD but it would be interesting to see if it will boot without a hard disk, and play games et al.
