E3 2005: Sony PS3 revealed - System, controller pics and info inside

PS3 News | The PS3 console and controller is revealed.
We have the first images of Sony's PlayStation 3 and its controller for our PALGN viewers.

Keep in mind that the pictures say "Design and specifications subject to change without notice". If Sony gets a lot of bad feedback (which it seems like they will, judging from initial reactions to the controller), the design could be changed.

As an update, here's a summary of the most important info revealed during Sony's pre-E3 conference. Expect a full list of specs to follow.
  • PS3 will be backwards compatible with all PS1 and PS2 games.
  • PS3 will support 7 Bluetooth controllers out of the box.
  • PS3 will have six USB slots for peripherals - 4 in front and 2 in back.
  • PS3 will launch in Q1 2006.

ARGH, the controller WTF?!

Looks like a third party job. Exactly the same buttons, but a really stupid shape.

Still kept the worst d-pad ever. Still kept the sticks in an uncomfortable place. Still kept the SNES buttons. Still kept the stupid shapes for button names.

Just added uglyness!

Thats what I thought Luke! It looks like a fricken boomerang!

The console itself is a very slick piece of work (though the Spiderman font is a little baflfing).

The controller looks pretty interesting too. Who knows, it might be comfortable to use.

Might...

That is one trippy controller...

They didn't change the input medium at all - it's the same old controller with a "boomerang" look, like Karl said...

But, yes, the console is cool looking.

After reading the specs of this PS3 system (Blue-ray discs, etc.), and seeing some of the games on the way... I think if there is any system I get other than Nintendo's new console offering, it'll be the PSP - Sony is really getting the hang of this whole console business, and with PSP connecivity, they'll have quite a bit to offer.

So far, so good!

I take back everything I said in the other thread about Sony being a little sneaky using the concept of "change" to promote the PS3.

This is a massive, massive surprise. icon_eek.gif

OMG... i really don't like that controller...

i really hope the old controllers make a return... or are also compatible...

Hmm... I like the console - even if it is a little bit too much like the PS2. Shouldn't judge the controller without holding it, but it looks pretty damn awful.

That controller looks very uncomfortable! But I will never know till I try it icon_razz.gif! I wonder if I throw it, would it return? icon_lol_old.gif

yuck! I hope the revolution controllers are nice and comfy like the gamecube's and not some stupid "futuristic" design that throws ergonomics out the window..

So this isn't a joke :0 !! That's a terrible controller - still can't say that untill I've tried it and I prefer the 360 design to the PS3 (both concole and controller)

No Sony fanboy will be able to hold that controller with all the lubricant left over on their hands. My first thought when I saw the console was that they'd got a fridge and a scanner drunk and the result had been spray-painted chrome. 5 seconds out of the box it'll have more scratch marks than a choir boy, and in the case of those fanboys I mentioned earlier (bless their twisted little hearts, oh wait, changed 'bless' to 'tear out'), nearly as many suspicious stains.

Don't even get me started on what it looks like on it's side.

Yes, I'm afraid them fanboys do have a nasty side. I agree with most of the posts here...the left stick looks too difficult to even use. All that's left now is the Revolution to been shown...6 hours to go.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Kept on waiting for it to open up. Don't like the look of the console, but the games look great.

And what's this? No stand? icon_biggrin.gif

The PS3 doesn't need a stand. If you look at the dreadful design, it doesn't need one at all. So this coming generation only Nintendo need a stand.

That controller compliments the console quite well. *blech*

Lol xbox fan using a mac. Classic.

PS2 doesn't need a stand either...

i quite like the console design though... i just wonder how it will fit where i need it to go...

i hope they're going to have high quality analog video outputs, ie component for the most of us that don't have a tv with hdmi.

Revolution doesn't "need" a stand, it can work horizontally. But I see what you mean. icon_smile.gif
(Can all three next-gen consoles operate both ways, by the way? icon_kero.gif)

Have a look at a Warp Pipe Staff member's take on the designs of the three next-generation consoles, it's hilarious icon_lol.gif

^ the only one i haven't seen horizontal since being announced is the XBox 360...

heh, thats pretty funny icon_smile.gif

EDIT: wrote "have" instead of "haven't"

You both mean vertically I presume. Yes the Rev doesn't need a stand, but since its there you may as well make use of it. Much like the PS2 doesn't need a stand. 360 deffinitely works vertically. As does the PS3. There's pictures about the place. Go look.

Those pictures make me feel violently sick...
