Metal Gear: Rising trailer leaked, directed by Platinum Games

PS3 News | Blood and guts and vindication.
The 2011 Spike Video Game Awards are scheduled to screen in the states today, but it appears one of the biggest reveals has slipped early. Hideo Kojima, set to attend the event, has long promised to show a new trailer for the oft-delayed Metal Gear: Rising, as well as reveal what he has been calling 'the truth'. Fans of Metal Gear need not wait, as the trailer has leaked online hours ahead of schedule.

Outside of showing brand new story and gameplay details for Raiden's solo hack-and-slash adventure, the trailer vindicates a circulating rumour we posted earlier this year. Yes, that's right; Metal Gear: Rising is no longer being developed at Kojima Productions. Instead, Kojima Productions is producing the title and offering support, meanwhile Platinum Games, famed for Vanquish and Bayonetta, will be helming development.

Strange and exciting news indeed. Look forward to hearing more about the title soon.

Woah. Badass.

I could not be more excited.

The insanity of Kojima's creation coupled with the general excellence of Platinum Games... I love it.

I also love the off the wall 80s kitschiness of the trailer. Fantastically different from Kojima's serious, portentous style.

Damn Infringement! Here's it again for ya'll. It's where I watched it.

I said this in the other thread, but I'm gonna repeat myself. Yes!! Recently purchased Bayonetta again for my 360, was playing it.... so good! This game is in good hands.

This trailer is like a litmus test for those with no taste. Anyone who can't appreciate the glorious cheese might as well go and stick to 'realistic' and 'serious' games like... erm... Modern Warfare?

ha, awesome.

that said, i've not really liked either of platinum's other releases, so... who knows?

Well it certainly differs from the Metal Gear games that were created by Kojima, but i hope your comments were not insulting Kojimas work by saying this is what a metal gear game should be?

All of Kojimas games were awesome, sure 4 was full of cinematics, but when you understand that Kojima wanted to originaly make movies it makes perfect sense.

So sure this game should be fun, and seeing another game from the guys that made Vanquish and Bayonetta is great, but please dont diss Kojima. If it wasnt for him, this game wouldnt have seen the light of day.

That Metal Gear Ray takedown looked pretty cool....I might still keep an eye on this one.

Man **** that, this is far far more exciting then anything kojima has put out. Hopefully with platnium games behind it we'll get an actual **** game not a bunch of long winded cut scenes with dollops of gameplay put throught it as an attempt to justify the fact that it's on the playstation instead of at the cinema.

Banefire, I would never diss Kojima. I adore Kojima's voice... But this is just so refreshingly balls-out insane and irreverent.

I must admit I was sceptical when this was first announced, I truly thought the MGS series should've ended at 4, but that trailer was kinda awesome. Kinda reminds me of Ninja Gaiden, except just a bit more insane icon_biggrin.gif
And Revengeance, word of the year!

I might be in the minority here, but I hope story-wise, it's relatively self-contained. If they try to link it with the other games, I'm afraid they'll create even more plot holes icon_confused.gif And hehe, **** Raiden, not sure how I feel about that, but it's better than whiny Raiden icon_smile.gif And I'm glad they removed the Solid from the title, Metal Gear Rising seems more appropiate. Logo look cool too icon_y1.gif Can't wait to see more!

Edit: Ehh, that word's censored? How about very confident? icon_razz.gif

You either love it or hate it. The metal gear in the title looks like it just means it follows the story further. Looks different to say the least. I'm not sure if I'll love this as much as tactical espionage action, will have to see the final product before i make a purchase to be honest, and I'm a massive MG fan since the NES days.

No, **** that. I don't play MGS to experience a **** beat em up and I daresay most fans would be exactly the same.[/i]

Well that's what you're getting, so sucks to be you.

Why do people have trouble accepting a slash em up in the MG world, which is what this game has always been held out to be?

This is a spin off, and won't be replacing the mainline MGS series.

I'm happy to see a dev like Platinum playing with Kojima's toys.

What's the problem?

I hated Bayonetta and was very meh towards Vanquish, but god damn, they've captured Raiden's skills and power in this game pretty damn well. And stealth? Really? You're a Cybernetic Ninja that absolutely **** people up in MGS4 with no stealth.

Looks pretty sick.

This isn't Metal Gear Solid, it's a spin-off game. I'm kind of baffled that so many fans are upset by the emphasis on action over narrative and stealth. The tagline for Rising is "Lightning Bolt Action" not "Tactical Espionage Action". You're also playing as Raiden the overpowered cyborg ninja who stopped a moving ship with one arm less than a minute after cutting his other one off.

If this were Metal Gear Solid 5 I'd be disappointed in the drastic change in style and gameplay. Metal Gear is my favourite gaming franchise and I'd love to see another game with the lengthy cutscenes and over the top narrative some people here seem to hate. But the long cutscenes and dialogue exchanges I and others do find interesting and enjoy in MGS games would continually disrupt the flow of an over the top action game like Rising.

Not to mention the fact that it'd be a waste to not let the player hack and slash **** to pieces as we've seen in MGS4 and the trailers for Rising. I remember back when I played MGS: VR Missions as Gray Fox hoping for a spin-off game where you could focus on action gameplay over stealth. Rising looks like being that game for me and as a result I'm excited and like what I see.

With all that said if they do get around to making a MGS5 I want and expect it to be similar to the style we're used to.

I haven't yet finished Bayonetta (I really should...) but I loved Vanquish. That game was gold and such a joy to play. I'm really confident that Platinum Games will deliver a game that will show up those who dismissed it.

I hope it's great, of course. Unfortunately, all signs (what little there are) point to another 5 hour swing-and-a-miss attempt at a piss-take from Platinum. They easily could have taken Raiden out for another ironic lead to camp and sass their way through a game I don't care about.

Prove me wrong, children. Prove me wrong.

So. By the looks of things. It's going to be the game Lords of Shadow should have been. It may end up being the first time I sit down and finish a Metal Gear game since the abomination that was the second of the Solid series.

So, here's what happened.

- Original Rising direction failed. They essentially had the cutting gimmick and that's it. Tried to write a story and revolve a game around it and it apparently never felt 'enough' to make a proper game. That E3 demo cutting watermelons and ****? That was literally all the game was.
- Rising was cancelled.
- Kojima invited Platinum dudes down to KojiPro. Started talking about rebooting the game and having them develop it.
- Platinum tasked with doing 100% gameplay. KojiPro tasked with story/cutscenes.
- Rising was originally set between MGS2 and MGS4. Platinum felt that the setting was limiting their scope of gameplay. Talked to Kojima, and Kojima agreed. Platinum has a 'gameplay first' policy that Kojima respected, and thus Rising is now set post-MGS4.
- Script, due to setting change, has been re-written from scratch.

Nice dot points Jarrod. I just hope this doesn't mark the end of Tactical Espionage Action and Kojima can produce a few more gems. This game might also make some new fans who enjoy a rich story with their hack and slash.
