Sony and Quickflix partner up

PS3 News | Yet another reason why you should never leave your couch.
Always hated how the US gets all the cool stuff like Netflix and Hulu on all their consoles? Yep, we’re with you, but if you're a Sony fan, you needn’t rage any longer. That's because news has filtered through that from later in the year, PlayStation 3 users connected to the glorious world wide web will be able to gain access to Quickflix’s (Australia’s own version of Netflix) online movie-streaming service.

Chris Taylor, Quickflix CEO, said: "Having entered a streaming agreement for Sony Bravia in July we’re very excited to now extend the partnership to PlayStation via its game console platform."

"Over 1.3 million Australian consumers who own an internet connectable PlayStation 3 will have access to Quickflix’s on demand movie streaming service. This is a significant moment in the evolution of IPTV delivered entertainment in Australia and a major development for our company."

While specific details such as plans and price structures have yet to be revealed, it’s definitely exciting times for PS3 users as well as Sony who have been attempting to bolster their video services through the likes of iView, and Mubi. Michael Ephraim, managing director of Sony Australia, is definitely happy, stating "This exciting agreement with Quickflix will further enhance PS3’s already strong entertainment on demand credentials across TV, games, music and now, an even larger range of movie options."

"If you love games, and your family loves movies, quite simply there is no better choice of device for your home than PlayStation 3, which is also one of the most highly awarded Blu-Ray players."

Sure it's music to the ears of media lovers across the country, but do YOU care? More importantly, can regular Aussie bandwidth limits support such a service? We definitely hope so.

I care, and we're finally getting to the point where we have internet plans with enough data allowance to make use of this kind of service. It's great to see a service like this available in Australia, it's the kind of thing we've been missing out on for years. icon_smile.gif

I fully care.

I would love to be able to get home Friday night, sit back with the GF, polish some Dark Souls then whack on a movie without having to get up.

If they price it FAIRLY.

I always rent movies form the video shop, I like to rent Blu Rays for $4 or less. But those times are a changin, theres heaps of movies I would like to just put in my queue and watch, for $4. $4 is the limit for older movies for me, and $6 for new. If it exceeds this, its back to the old ways.

I'm not sure I do, I mean it's cool and all but streaming HD movies is going to eat into my download limit something awful. Not to mention that I doubt my internet would be able to do so seemlessly.

I doubt that the PSN could handle that, at least over here. Personall, and anecdotal (over and over again in the forums), experience with downloads and updates over PSN finds it slow as a stoned tortoise - I wouldn't be willing to let go of any amount of money to test streaming an HD film over it.

If the speed of my PSN is anything to go by, I MIGHT be able to watch a movie at 240p resolution without hitching or buffering. Its quite pathetic really. That's on a 10mbps internet connection.
