The event started off with a video presentation, which basically shed light on the development of Killzone 3 and the history of the franchise and its evolution. It summed up the story and how it has progressed since Killzone 2 and took a deep look into the main characters of Killzone 3, their personalities and actors. It was quite interesting to see the various actors and developers share their first experience in working on the game from the perspective of their respective roles, they certainly gave some interesting insight and really showed a lot of passion and dedication. The video presentation also highlighted all the main features, modes, changes and weapons in Killzone 3. Overall, it was a pretty good summary of the game and the franchise as a whole.
Once the presentation was done, Commando Steve (most recently of The Biggest Loser fame) took charge (literally) and turned us couch potatoes into soldiers for that night only. He's a true veteran from the military who did a nice job in giving us the impression that we were in a real recruitment camp by shouting orders and making us proceed in an orderly fashion. The curtains were drawn and we were greeted with an elaborate set piece that resembled a war zone. There were flashing red and white lights, snow machines to add a snowfall effect, loud sirens, crates, boxes, grenades and camouflage nets to create a really cool and atmospheric setting. Sony really went all out to create a unique setting for this event, and it really made it special.
There were several game stations set up, each running KillZone 3. A different set of game stations were placed in different sections, with each showcasing a different feature and this gave attendees a chance to experience the multiplayer mode, the elaborate 3D effects, the standard display and even test out the PlayStation Move support using rifle like attachment device. Game stations aside, there was an area where attendees could build a Killzone 3 weapon using plastic parts and there were some intimidating Helghast statues standing around.
Commando Steve proudly exclaimed at the start of the event “Everything you are about to experience in this game, I’ve experienced in real life!!” (The man has taken down a few Helghast soldiers in his day). All the attendees were divided into teams based on the number on the dog tags that were given to each of us at entry, and at random ten people were chosen to take part in multiplayer death match contest for a chance to win the limited ‘Helghast’ edition of the game. It was an intense contest with one skilled player coming out on top with a total of 27 kills, but the remaining nine participants weren’t left to dry as each of them were given a retail copy of Killzone 3, everyone was a winner that night and had a great time.
Overall, it was a great night and probably one of the best events that Sony has organised for the Playstation community. Many of you are probably enjoying the game right now, but not as much as resident Killzone addict, Denny Markovic. In the media only event that took place before the community event, Mr. Markovic laid waste to every other journalist to win the ‘Helghast’ edition and is working hard to get a review done for you guys. How much does Denny love Killzone 3? Stay tuned to PALGN to find out! (Hint: He loves it THIS much).
