Mass Effect 2 PlayStation 3 details clarified

PS3 News | Squishing rumours with space boots.
It feels like it was only yesterday that we reported on rumoured details concerning BioWare's upcoming port of Mass Effect 2 for the PlayStation 3. Unwilling to leave us pondering the rumour's authenticity, BioWare's Jesse Houston, Producer for the PlayStation 3 build of Mass Effect 2, has responded with clarification as to what is and is not in the port.

According to Jesse, the original build of Mass Effect 2 along with downloadable content packs Kasumi: Stolen Memory, Overlord, Lair of the Shadow Broker, and the Blood Dragon Armor will all appear on the game disk. Additionally, the game will come with a Cerberus Network access code, much like the Xbox 360 and PC releases, allowing download of the release Cerberus Network content.

Just as the rumour suggested, there will also be an interactive comic back-story to fill in new gamers on Shepard's adventures throughout the original Mass Effect. Developed by BioWare Edmonton, the original Mass Effect 2 developers, as well as Dark Horse Comics, the comic will allow gamers to experience the major choices presented in the first game, and have them carry over to their Mass Effect 2 experience. This interactive comic will be available for download on the Cerberus Network. Jesse's post specifies it as exclusive to the PlayStation 3 for it's 'initial release'. Take that as you will.

Sadly, the supposed 'six hour mission' reported in the original rumour was nothing more than a translation issue. There will be no extended mission included, and the original report was instead referring to 'six hours' of additional content from vanilla Mass Effect 2, which is made up from the various DLC mission packs we've already mentioned.

Lastly, around the time of release there will be some exclusive paid and free DLC packs for the PlayStation 3 build. However, these 'exclusive' packs will be made up of content that was, at some point, available to PC and Xbox 360 gamers, but would otherwise be unavailable to players of the PlayStation 3 build. Jesse could not give out details on what these packs would contain, but if we were to hazard a guess we'd say they will be made up of the pre-order bonuses available on the original game's release from retailers such as EB Games, as well as the content made available through the Dr. Pepper promotion codes.

So there you have it. A timely response from BioWare, and some clarification on what the PlayStation 3 build of Mass Effect 2 has in store for gamers next year.

Phew. I'm fine with giving PS3 owners the DLC, but exclusive content is the bane of this generation.

Massive sigh of relief right there. Now, as I said before, i'm going to hope for an Xbox 360/PC Game of the Year/Ultimate Edition with the exact same contents. It probably won't happen, but after the critical acclaim that the game recieved, you never know. My patience in holding out for Fallout 3 and GTA 4 was rewarded, now let's see if the same thing happens with Mass Effect 2. =P

Same thing happened with Borderlands and (more importantly) Dragon Age so I would be very surprised if they don't do the same for Mass Effect 2.

I have just begun playing ME2 on PC.. but it is a retail copy. Does anyone know if I can activate this through steam and get the DLC through Steam? I have no idea how to do that as I've never been presented the opportunity to buy a retail copy and then later add DLC via Steam.

Is the Mass Effect 2 DLC even on Steam? You should have got a Cerberus Network code with the copy of the game (assuming it's new) and you can just get all the DLC through there.

ME2 isn't a Steamworks game, so Im pretty sure you cant register your code through Steam.

As long as you have PayPal you can buy the DLC using BioWare points through the BioWare social network.

Oh right right.. I do have a code to that cerebus network thingy.. I thought it was just for the standard "register your software and get a free goodie" thing. I'll check it out later on when I am closer to finishing the game. icon_smile.gif

It is. Cerberus Network is a bunch of free goodies, probably worth having as you play through the game (as it includes an extra character). Register your code on the BioWare social network to grab them

There's also some paid DLC packs there as well, which are the ones you need PayPal for.
