Time Crisis Razing Storm Preview

PS3 Preview | Razing hell with the Move.
If there is one light gun series that has stood the test of time well, it’s the Time Crisis series. It is arguably the most iconic and popular light gun franchise around. Created by none other than the arcade masters at Namco-Bandai, each Time Crisis game in the past has provided players with a frantic and addictive light gun shooting experience, loaded with explosive action, a nice weapon selection and a simple yet effective cover system. Traditionally, these games have been ported to Sony consoles and the last home conversion we saw was Time Crisis 4 on the PlayStation 3. Fans of the series are obviously well aware of the GunCon light guns that Namco-Bandai specifically developed for the Sony consoles, with the most recent one being GunCon 3 for the PlayStation 3. However, it seems that the GunCon may be facing some competition from the PlayStation Move.

Yesterday we shared our hands-on experience with The Shoot, and we mentioned how the Move controller can be used as a fully functioning light gun when locked on to a special shooting attachment. Today we talk about Time Crisis: Razing Storm, which due for a release in November 2010. Essentially, this is a compilation that will feature three complete light gun games: a Time Crisis spin-off called Razing Storm, a re-release of Time Crisis 4 and finally an unrelated title called Deadstorm Pirates. The build we played allowed us to test a level from Razing Storm.

Razing Storm is a follow up to another Time Crisis spin-off called Crisis Zone, and shares similar gameplay mechanics. In Razing Storm players will be making extensive use of the machine gun, and will also get to use other heavy duty guns such as a rocket launcher. The game will feature highly interactive and destructible environments, with more focus and detail than what you normally find in such games.

The level we played featured intense and relentless action, utilising the classic ‘on rails’ progression found in most light gun games. We mindlessly showered bullets on just about everything, and watched the real time damage system work its magic with eye popping effects. We also got to use rocket launchers, which allowed us to turn enemy mechs into scraps. Speaking of which, the game will feature plenty of heavy duty war machines as formidable foes, but of course there are plenty of weak generic soldiers to blast away.

The Move controller, combined with the shooting attachment, worked nicely as a light gun and performed well in terms of aiming precision and responsiveness. One issue we had was that reloading required us to press the circle button on the Move controller, which felt a bit awkward. However, this may have been just one of the ways a player could reload a weapon, but we didn’t inquire into alternative methods. As nicely as the Move controller functions, fans will be pleased to know that Razing Storm will be fully compatible with the GunCon 3, along with the other games in Time Crisis: Razing Storm.

Time Crisis: Razing Storm will most likely be the game of choice for light gun shooting fans. With three complete games in one convenient package and compatibility with both PlayStation Move and GunCon 3, fans of Namco-Bandai’s past efforts should be excited about this generous offering.
Overall:
Time Crisis: Razing Storm is shaping up to be an explosive package that fans of the genre should be excited about.

I would love to see this compatible with the peddle from a guitar hero drum for reloading.

Or at bundle it with some kind of peddle. The reloading never works as well without it.
