The Fight is based around the illegal underground fighting scene. You play as an angry brawler with one and only one goal - to beat the living daylights out of your opponents in a series of no-holds barred contests. As far as we can tell from the demo build, there isn’t much in terms of plot or characterisation. We tested the multiplayer mode, which finally gave us ambitious and competitive PalGN writers a chance to compete in a long overdue no-holds barred street fight. One thing worth noting is that the game asked us to calibrate the Move controllers before the start of each match. The calibration process is rather simple and quick, allowing fights to go smoothly in terms of response time.
The game is played with two Move controllers, thus allowing players to dish out punches with both hands. The main actions available in the build were punching, blocking and dodging, and we have seen these actions captured nicely in Wii games like Wii Sports boxing and Punch Out!, but the game also allowed us to move our character around freely by holding down the trigger on the Move controller and then directing the character using the motion of the Move sticks.
The game played out quite well and we were quite impressed with the way the Move was utilised. The game responded quite accurately to our movements, in terms of the speed and weight of our punches. We were able to connect really combination of quick and light jabs and also able to land in some slow and heavy punches. It certainly felt very nice and the responsiveness really got us into the fighting mood, that and we always wanted to beat the stuffing out of our editors… ahem.
Apart from the standard fist strikes, the game also allowed us to land in some sharp elbow strikes by holding down a button while swinging the Move controller. We were told that the game will make extensive use of the buttons on the Move controller, which will be used in combination with the standard punches a player throws to allow for a wide range of attacks and combos. The game will also feature grapple attacks, such as the headlock. So there is a clear mix of boxing and pro wrestling styles of fighting here.
The game has a very gritty and edgy look, capturing the dark and cruel nature of the underground fighting scene. The graphics, while not featuring any ground breaking detail or effects, are still pretty stylised with plenty of graphic blood and gore effects.
The Fight is shaping up nicely and we quite enjoyed the build we played. We were told that there is much more work to be done before the game’s release in November 2010. If the final build has the right amount of polish and features, then The Fight could be a must have PlayStation Move title.
