Get ready for the Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood multiplayer beta

PS3 News | Brothers unite.
A press release from Ubisoft has detailed the release of the Assassin's Creed Brotherhood multiplayer beta.

The multiplayer beta will only be available to customers who pre-order the game on PlayStation 3 and will be active for a limited period of time. The beta is scheduled to be released in September this year and will allow gamers to take their pick from a wide range of characters, each with their own skills and weaponry. Those wondering how multiplayer will work can check out this trailer.

Haven't decided which version of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood to pre-order? In addition to the standard edition, Ubisoft are releasing two collectors' editions:

Auditore Edition - RRP $119.95 (PS3, 360), $99.95 (PC)
· Special edition, 3D effect packaging
· Multiplayer character cards
· Assassin's Creed Lineage DVD
· Exclusive 'Aqua Gear' single player map

Limited Codex Edition – RRP $149.95 (PS3, 360), $129.95 (PC)
· Renaissance Collector Chest
· Multiplayer character cards
· Map of Rome
· Codex book
· DVD and soundtrack
· Exclusive 'Aqua Gear' and 'Trajan Market' single player maps
· 'Harlequin' and 'Officer' multiplayer characters

If you are eyeing the Codex Edition, take note: it is only available from EB Games.

Those wanting to see some images of these collector's edition can check them out below.

This greatly appeals to me....

It's a pity you have to pre-order to get access though. I'm starting to get sick of forced allegiances when I pre-order at a particular store, only to have better prices, earlier releases etc to be offered at other places. And price/offer matching rarely goes down as a smooth process for me.

God damn. Even though I do have a PS3, I play my Creed on 360. It's a shame that they can't release it across both platforms, but at least they're putting some care into the multiplayer...I'm quietly excited. Genuinely, this could be a great experience.

Also, pre-ordered the behemoth Codex edition. Looks gawjus.

Someone play it in the future and tell me right now if they've brought the controls up to Uncharted 2's standard.

head over to http://au.playstation.com/psn/competitions/detail/item297476/Exclusive-Beta-Access/ and try your luck then

i really dont like having to pre-order aswell, you would of though this would of been something like a playstation plus extra thing instead of a competition or a pre-order to gain access.

Strange that the two special editions have items that the other doesn't have. Usually one is a superset of the other.

Really? Uncharted's controlls were my one issue with the game. Everything felt too loose.

[EDIT] Wait you said uncharted 2, my bad, still I didn't find the controlls in that nessicarily better then AC2, they're trying to do completly differnt things. Esspecialy in the platforming.

Uncharted 2 presents the platforming as a puzzle, with certain bits needed to finish it. Assassins Creeds platforming is more like a playground, there's no right and wrong just whatever you want.

It could very well be that the DVD mentioned in the Codex Edition is the Lineage DVD. The image was vague on that. Also, maybe the packaging for the Auditore Edition is the same for the actual game case in the Codex Edition? It would make a lot of sense for them to do that, in my opinion.

There's a fairly clear right and wrong in AC (1 and 2): when I'm trying to press the controller in the direction of a pole and it decides to jump off to the side of it and fall to my doom, that's wrong. When the camera snaps to a new direction automatically and I try to compensate but the game's already decided I'm jumping in a direction I no longer deem relevant, that's wrong.

As near as I can tell, there's no weighting for points of usefulness in their algorithms, and the controls are based on which way you've been pressing at the start of this jump animation so you're going that way even though you've got like a quarter of a second before he actually leaves the surface he's on which is more than enough time to compensate for the camera doing stupid ****. Addressing those two points will be more than enough to stop me wanting to eject the disc and beat it in to little pieces with my controller.

I honestly never had a problem with anything you mentioned.

I did have problems with that in Uncharted though.

What Gooberman mentioned is exactly one of the reason why I couldn't finish AC yet. In fact, I didn't know it was a "popular" issue until I made a mention on it in IRC and found out it wasn't only me that had control issues. I often just miss the pole by a bit which is odd.

Not to mention the many times I swore at the controller for being slow to responding to a change in direction which results me having to hide from the guards or the time I just slightly moved my thumb because I somehow was pressing the button too hard and that was just enough to get off blend on a horse for under a sec, which was enough to get chased by the guards as well icon_sad.gif .

Maybe I am spoilt since there are many games that are more responsive and more lenient in controls and in terms of where I will land and stuff but for me, AC controls just doesn't do it for me. Tried to enjoy the game but being chased by guard so often and missing a jump makes it unenjoyable.

Gooberman hit the metaphorical nail on its metaphorical head. I've found it esspecially trying during race events where you're trying to perform faster movements with greater precision.

The controls were one of the many problems with Uncharted. I honestly don't understand why that game got such good reviews. It almost seemed like they recored my 9 hour rage session playing through Uncharted and took note of absolutely everything I said, because they fixed almost everything I complained about in Uncharted 2.

Observing the change in controls between both games there would be beneficial to the Ubi Montreal team here. The story is enough to keep me going, but I'd really rather not rage while experiencing it.

Just out of curiosity, are you 'sprinting' all the time in Assassin's Creed? I had similar problems in the first game where I'd do all my platforming by clamping down the High Profile (R1/RT) and Sprint (X/A) buttons and just pointing Altair with the analogue stick. It wasn't until the second game that I realised what a bad idea that was. If you just hold the High Profile button and leave Sprint alone unless you need the extra speed or are committing to a jump things go much more smoothly. It seems like when you're running at full speed Ezio actively seeks out things to jump to within a certain arc of his turning radius, so it can be hard to avoid certain things that take his interest. At jogging speed it's no longer a problem.

I simply adore Assassin's Creed but I'm finding it hard to get excited about Brotherhood. It feels like the higher-ups have deemed that the Desmond Myles side of the story doesn't market as well as the Animus stuff, and if the real story gets focus-tested out of the Assassin's Creed series I'll be extremely upset. I know there is at least a little Desmond-ness in Brotherhood so I'll certainly be buying it, but I don't have any interest in multiplayer and continuation of Ezio's story is not what I want out of the series.

I'm glad to see that the PC version isn't just a port coming months down the line, though. I'm not one of the PC gaming elite who won't accept less than 2560 x 1200 with 4xAA or anything, but I've bought the PS3 versions of both AC games and the screen-tearing gives me headaches. It's never much of a problem in both games but AC2 on PS3 was honestly hurting my eyes. I swapped them both for the PC versions and I'm getting a rock-solid, V-sync'd 60FPS and it is glorious.

Don't write off Desmond's story just yet, it has always been the most veiled aspect of the series and I'm sure Desmond will have some roll to play in Brotherhood.

EDIT: Interview with Mathieu Gagnon

So are we going to see a lot of Desmond in Brotherhood as well? I know you said it was Ezio’s story earlier, but will we still jump back to the present day every once in a while?

Desmond is back. Desmond’s our hero. Because essentially the story of Assassin’s Creed is, in the present day, we have an [inaudible] between Abstergo and the Assassins. It’s an all-out war on their side as well, even though we haven’t delved into it much. But that’s our setting. That’s our narrative. So obviously Desmond is gonna be back. You’re gonna learn more stuff through the multiplayer and single-player about what’s going on with that war in the present.
Also: (may contain spoilers for some)

Do you refer to the thing that's noted as "Sprint/Free Run" on the HUD? Sprinting is when you're on flat land. It switches to Free Run when you're doing acrobatic stuff. It defeats the point of "Free Run" if you constantly have to release the button and press it again. Feature doesn't work as advertised, needs revision, please see above notes, etc.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. Ezio was cool and all, but in the long run I just don't give a **** about what happens to him. Desmond on the other hand, esspecialy with that ending.

****, am still waiting till we get an entire Desmond game, (Come on AC:3)

Feature works fine, sounds like you're using it wrong.

And that's why you should never be a game designer.

Holding this button down makes Ezio automatically adapt to any object in his path. Just push the left thumbstick in the direction you want him to go
I assume you know where to stick your sarcasm.

IMO, the controls were fine. Any simpler and the game would play itself... I found it pretty easy, especially with all the health vials in AC2.

Today I received the beta key for my preorder. Haven't tried redeeming it but does anyone know when the actual beta will be released, and how big it is? If its worth playing, I will have to re-setup the wireless network in my house to try it out (haven't had ps3 hooked up to play online games since I quitted Metal Gear Online in 08).
