DLC announced for Red Dead Redemption

PS3 News | Relax, the first one is free.
Rockstar Games, has announced the ‘Outlaws To The End’ Co-op multiplayer Mission Pack for their upcoming sandbox western, Red Dead Redemption. It will be available in June simultaneously for the Xbox 360 and PS3, at no extra cost to the player. That is, it's free.

‘Outlaws To The End’ is actually the first of three Co-op Mission Packs, and will feature six multiplayer missions "full of outlaws, epic gunfights, and revolution for 2-4 players". It will also include additional multiplayer XP rewards, as well as new Achievements and Trophies to unlock. These six missions will play out across the game world, and will include:

  • Walton’s Gold
Walton’s Gang have taken control of a mining camp rich with gold. Fight through the camp and load your mine cart with as much gold as you can carry and get out as fast as you can – Walton’s boys have rigged the place to blow.

  • The River
Ride a raft down river, taking out rebel encampments along the way until you reach the rebel stronghold of Nosalida and a final epic battle for the town’s massive weapons caches. Watch out for Gatling gun-equipped enemy rafts.

  • Ammunition
The Mexican Army has the town of Tesoro Azul under siege. Storm the gates under heavy cannon, Gatling gun and sniper fire to destroy the Mexican artillery placements.
“Multiplayer in Red Dead Redemption offers players a whole new way to encounter the massive open world we’ve created, but we felt the experience would not be complete without co-op game play,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “With these missions, we wanted to create new ways for players to share in the experience of engaging with this amazing landscape.”

I guess this will be the way of DLC, hook you with the first one free. I actually think it's a good idea. Think about it this way, it takes time for a game to go from development (complete) all the way to the shelves. Usually in that time developers are working on bug fixes, enhancements or addons (or their next title). Combining these in a package with new content and giving it away for free encourages people to a) buy the game, and b) keep playing the game after finishing the core content (i.e. non-DLC components). That in turn keeps people interested in the game and later DLC offerings. Often I find myself shelving or selling a game once I'm done with it and not coming back to it when DLC is released months later.

So the first one is free. After that they jack up the price when you come back wanting more. Then before you know it you're stealing TVs, hocking your mother's jewelry and standing on a city corner wearing fishnet stockings!

But yeah, free is good icon_wink.gif

This strategy is certainly becoming the norm now. But free is good any way you look at it and these descriptions sound like fun.

Nice!! I am really looking forward to RDR, hopefully it lives up to the hype icon_smile.gif

It's nice to get free DLC, but I don't mind paying for quality DLC. So as long as the paid content is up to the quality of the Borderlands DLC. The Zombie and Secret Armory DLC's were well worth their prices icon_smile.gif

And as Cyph stated, if the DLC takes too long to come out after the game people will have moved on.

It must be a hard balance to justify that point of DLC release, too early and the industry complains that the content should have been on the disk, then too late and no-one is interested! Bioware seems to be getting it right with the DA content releases icon_smile.gif

I'm not sure Dragon Age is the best example of good DLC, the timing is right but the content has seemed to be a bit lacking. I guess that is because Dragon Age was so epic and the DLC a piece will entertain most gamers for a couple of hours.

Realistically the only way to ensure that EVERYONE can jump on and use the DLC.
How many people have bought map packs etc and then find they hardly play them because everyone else couldn't be bothered to pay for it.

I'm not a multiplayer kinda guy, so I remain uninterested. I'm hoping RDR gets the Episodes from Liberty City treatment, though.
