Top Gear track to feature in Gran Turismo 5

PS3 News | If only we knew when that would be.
Fans of TopGear's "reasonably priced car" will be in for treat if they decide to purchase Gran Turismo 5 , with the news that the show's famous test track will be appearing in the upcoming PlayStation 3 racing title.

This would come as no surprise to some as the Gran Turismo series creator Kazunori Yamauchi is a known car enthusiast and a great fan of the show. When asked about the move with the Top Gear website, Kazunori-san stated "simply because the Top Gear programme is so funny and interesting!"

Gran Turismo 5 currently carries an unspecified date for release.

In addition, the test track from the TV show will also be replicated in the game.

yeah i thought that was old new too. i like the last line of that old article though:

"Gran Turismo 5 is currently set for release in late 2008"

hahaha!!! was that supposed to be 2018??

Vaporware. Unless this has graphics that make my eyes bleed then what is taking so long

It will be out the day after the PS4 is released.

I don't care if this is 3 year old news, it's still awesome, and I didn't know this yet, so thank you, PalGN, for making my day better!

Yeah, I knew about this a while. It'll be nice to be a star in a reasonably-priced car.

New, old, it's irrelevant. Everything we hear about GT5 will be old news by the time it actually gets released.

i might have to write down some times that others have done the track in and the stig's times aswell be fun to try and beat them.

Actually, the current delay is due to it being remastered for 3DTV. It's true of course, that the top gear thing was well known even before prologue came out, it's weird that the news is being repeated. It should be this year, or at least hopefully some time before Forza 5 comes out.

One would hope that the times for cars that have run the track irl would be put into the game, and even some celebrity tracks as ghosts. I want Michael Gambon's lap, for instance. Not to mention Simon Cowell or Jay Kay.

Remastered? What needs doing for a 3D game to be rendered in 3D? They just need to draw a slightly different viewpoint every 2nd frame. Unless you mean they're trying to improve performance to maintain some sort of decent framerate.

Well, 3D is a pretty big deal from a development point of view because it puts so much pressure on the game's engine. My guess is that Polyphony Digital is working Sony's 3D middleware in to the Gran Turismo 5 engine so that it's completely compatible with whatever Sony has up their sleeves. 3D in itself isn't hard to do in games (Batman: Arkham Asylum Game of the Year Edition has 3D, for example) but a.) getting it running well and b.) integrating it with current systems (as in, Sony's OS integration, etc.) brings problems about, I guess.

Plus, running a game at 60fps is hard enough. Now double it and you've got some pretty atrocious problems brewing. I don't doubt that there were horrible performance issues. Still, I think the main reason is getting all the technologies working with Sony's 3D tech.

3D isn't just alternating frame positions. Anyway I highly doubt GT5 will be 3D. If Sony can get a blistering simple game like WipeOutHD to run at 60 fps in 3D Polyphony have no hope.

I am pretty certain Sony has shown GT5 running in 3D publicly. Also wasn't there a clip from Qore promoting PS3 3D and GT5 was a featured game?

i thought it was gt5 prologue that was seen before in 3d but i might be wrong

You are correct sir.

Yeah remastered is just a semi-correct word. as Augmentation was saying, it's actually pretty complex, and it's not like the stereoscopic 3D in Arkham and Avatar. At least, as I understand it.

My point was, no news is, no news, when it comes to GT5. I would imagine that there will be a 3D display of it at the E3 this year, but I highly doubt one of the developers will appear on stage with a release date tattooed on his arm.

Oh, for crying out loud... icon_rolleyes.gif

Maybe I just haven't seen it properly demonstrated, but I'm still not sold on 3D for gaming (are there even going to be any televisions to show it coming out in the next six months?) and I would much prefer they focus less on the "3D" feature and more on the "actually released" feature.

It's displaying two slightly offset frames to the player, simultaneously, one for each eye. Current solutions using polarising in various ways to achieve the effect. Since our eyes are not polarised we need glasses to view the current implementations of 3D technology.

I believe that is what alternating frame positions would mean. Two slightly different camera angles eye width apart.

Sorry, my question was a little cryptic, I must have been in a hurry. The implementation of 3D on the current crop of TVs is just alternating frame positions. They supply shutter glasses that blank out each eye at the right time so the correct images only get to the correct eye.

I thought you were suggesting that you knew something about why 3D is hard to achieve on PS3. Surely it's just a matter of flicking between two camera angles? Does this cause a problem due to the architecture of the PS3? I don't have any idea but am interested if anyone has a link explaining the difficulties.
