Nier is about a guy named Nier (Ed: original!), who lives in a dark world plagued by an incurable disease called the ‘Black Scrawl’ and constantly terrorised by strange demonic creatures. Things get personal when his daughter catches the disease, giving him enough motivation to fight the creatures head on in the hope of finding a cure.
While the game has been coined as an action RPG, the trailers give the impression that it is more action-oriented. Most gamers will probably start drawing comparisons to Devil May Cry, but we feel that Nier will have more in common with alternative action RPGs like Chaos Legion and even Drakengard. Thankfully, the core combat system seems to be more diverse and elaborate than what we saw in those games, hence the Devil May Cry comparisons.
Nier will be able to dish out some serious damage using a variety of devastating combos and attacks. While the trailer shows off only his sword, there will be more weapons to use. He will also be able to perform powerful spells and players will of course be spending sometime building/customising his stats and abilities. Like any RPG, there will be allies who will accompany Nier in his battles.
The game design isn’t clear at the moment but players can expect a typical RPG-style world to explore. However, we get the impression from trailers that this game will be about exploring a series of areas while battling hoards of enemies and bosses.
Graphically, Nier appears underwhelming at this stage. The character models, textures and animations look almost as weak as Cavia's typical output. That said, the game has a moody, sinister art-style and the blood effects look pleasingly stylised. Musically, the game seems to have a very gothic symphonic style.
With quality hack-and-slash action games like Bayonetta, God of War III and Dante’s Inferno filling up the first half of 2010, it’s very hard to get excited about Nier, despite its RPG elements and gimmicks. The combo system doesn’t look all that special but the magic spells certainly look unique enough to raise an eyebrow. Cavia's track record has been below-average to say the least, so our expectations of Nier are being kept in check for the time being.
