Criterion reveals what didn't get into Burnout Paradise

PS3 News | To the moon and back.
Those who have sampled the wares of Criterion's Burnout Paradise would well know that the title has seen an enormous share of both premium and free downloadable content since its release, but what of all of those ideas that didn't get past the brainstorming sessions? Most of them had been keep as closely guarded secrets - until now.

A recent post on the Criterion website has reflected on the task of crafting DLC for the title, in particular addressing the the design of Big Surf Island and the other Islands that were set to follow. But the most interesting aspect of this reflection is of some of the things that didn't make it into the title, particularly the fact that Burnout Paradise almost allowed us to fly to the moon and back.

"Someone on the team said that 'players want the moon on a stick when it comes to DLC,' we thought that was funny and thought we'd do it. The actual surface of the real Moon was modeled and it was drive-able. Lunar Challenges would have been totally unexpected - as would have been zero gravity Takedowns and Challenges," the team wrote.

"The idea was that we would have built a rocket pad on Big Surf. If you reached a certain Rank, or completed a number of specific challenges, you could drive there, press a button and the rocket would launch. Destination - Moon! (Now that would have beaten downloadable car liveries any day!)"

Other ideas nixed included the inclusion of planes, boats and helicopters, car vs. bike challenges and time travel portals.

The post in its entirety can be found over at the official Criterion website for those wanting a closer look into the weird and wonderful minds of game developers.

Some of these sounded really fun. It's a shame Paradise is all but abandoned with Criterion moving on to the NFS license now =(
